Rejected a 50% base counter offer

Hi all, if you've been following my saga on my previous post, I recently secured a position elsewhere for a 10% base increase (not bad in this economy) for an AE role because my current company's product, management and culture are completely f-ed.

When I tendered my resignation, my boss went full aggro on trying to counter-offer me and get me to stay. To give some context, I joined initially to cover smaller markets, and in the end, ended up in a sales role covering an entire asian geographical region, with no increase in salary (justified by me having better pipe). Our product went to shit due to security issues, and we're getting smashed by competition, multiple risky clients threatening cancellation due to millions of problems - you get the picture. I wanted out, long story short, got another gig in a company selling into an industry I have a passion in and understand the biz. So naturally, made the jump.

Trouble is, boss came back with a 50% base hike, which was tempting AF but I ultimately resisted. The global head of sales personally called me to ensure product issues are being addressed and we have a new CEO who seems to be quite smart (fired the bums in management that led to the problems in the first place). And to tell me target next year has been slashed by half.

I still resisted. There's a part of me that is wondering if I should have gone for the big cheese and stayed on (reneging my signed contract), but ultimately, I took the smaller base at the next company with a seemingly better culture, virtually zero competition and in extreme growth in this period - positive signals imo - and i speak the biz too. And importantly, mental health I guess doesn't have a dollar value.

Not looking for any advice or anything, just thought I'd share a recent development. Open to your thoughts though :)

You made the right choice. Honestly, the original company seemed desperate.

Good call. All the signs where on the wall, you read thwm clearly and you made your move to a company whose culture and language you speak. They say that if you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life. All the best.

You made the right call. When these problems start affecting the bottom line and the company begins circling the drain, you know who is going to be the first to get laid off? The guy getting paid 50% more than everyone else.

I've always been of the mind that youre just pushing the new job down the line taking a counter offer and frankly if they could pay 50% more base they shouldve given a raise

Donโ€™t ever look back. You wouldโ€™ve been far more miserable in the end had youโ€™d stayed.

You made the correct choice, management fixing product takes ages and never follow through in time. It's funny, you don't meet sales numbers you get canned, the product misses deadlines and they get promoted and excused.

Mental health reigns above all. I don't trust the 50% internal raise before leaving.

When management panics and promises product is being addressed - well why didnโ€™t you address it when we raised it in the first place

Itโ€™s just tactics to make you stay.

Also - if they offered you 10% increase - โ€œwhy u no offer it before I decided to leave?โ€ ๐Ÿ‘€

Almost as good of a decision as your WR name. Culture + mental health deserve more weight. But honestly you donโ€™t know for sure about a place until youโ€™re there for some time.

Wish WR was around when I was younger. I was the fool that took the 50% increase, hated the next 6 months of my life.

Icing on the cake, the recruiter that fought for me and I reneged on, ended up working at my dream company a couple years later. You can peace together the story from here. ๐Ÿ˜ฃ

very smart. I would never take a counter. You will pay more because I am leaving? Offered this earlier I may not have left. reinforcement the management is not too smart.

There's stats on if you accept the current company counter-offer most employees leave within 7ish months anyway. It would've been a band-aid and still happened at some point. You did the right thing. I had a similar thing happen to me.

Right choice mate, good on you! Grass always seems greener on the other side, however, it clearly seemed like you needed to leave your old employer. I have a background in HR/Recruitment, and I can tell you the odds of employee satisfaction after accepting a counter offer to stay at their current job, is staggeringly low. Wishing you a healthier and wealthier 2024! Go get 'em! :)

Never fall for the counter. They should have treated you well before you resigned. Plus, itโ€™s likely theyโ€™ll make life hell if you stay
