Sales and the affects on Mental Health

This might be one might be a difficult one to discuss. I'm curious on the sentiment here around how being in sales might affect your mental health.

I've been in sales a long time and I have personally noticed how its affected me. Some reasons

  • Financially being dependent on commissions to make a reasonable living.
  • Management expectations either good or bad creating stressors ( Poor leadership, lack of appropriate coaching, irrelevant sales plays etc)
  • Market conditions and economic downturn making it harder and harder to hit quota after years of high performance ( self doubt)
  • Lack of motivation - not in the right role or have the right product market fit.

If sales hasn't affected your mental health, you already lost your mind or you aren't doing it right...I don't see how you couldn't let the quota coaster and stress of sales + internal responsibilities and being the face for the entire organization (for good & bad) while juggling your personal life get to you at some point and have some lasting affects.

What a valuable topic. Honestly this is so important!

So much so that when I'm training a new team member (from SDR up to CRO) I start with mindset followed by a goal setting exercise.

Mindset is critical. Anyone in sales needs to feel confident that they are not defined by last months/quarters/years numbers. Crushing it doesn't make you a better person and falling short doesn't make you a terrible person. Know who you are and what you are actually working for and the roller coaster ride tends to flatten out.

My first company was so toxic that it literally drained me. Don't know if it was a blessing or a curse, but it took all my energy and motivation so now I don't care anymore. I don't have the energy to stress on work. I've just accepted that most things are out of my control. I also keep myself busy outside of work so that I don't think too much about work.

I can't think of any role anywhere that isn't stressful. My husband was a SpecEd teacher for years, and in comparison, sales is a breeze.

It's part of the game definately. You have good mental health when you are hitting numbers, and ready to jump off a building when things are crashing around you. Even worse when you get laid off like I did.

I come from finance where layoffs and firings happen all the time. I might just be desensitized to it.

Iโ€™m glad the conversation is being held, great post.

We have to be aware of not only our own mental health but of others as well. Life and work can be draining.

I would say that if you ever just need a day away from the computer do it. Donโ€™t be afraid to talk to someone, take time off, and make sure you try to work in some life balance.

Thank you for posting.

That's sales life style absolutely normal, recommend you to seek a leadership role at the next promotion cycle if possible, you'll still have a quota to meet though but with a way less pressure as a manager, wish you luck with that!

So it use to affect my mental health, however, after being in the game for the length of time that I have been there's other more important stuff and it's not my first rodeo. Stressing about numbers to be met and such has never helped

Taking care of your mental and physical well-being is crucial in sales. Prioritizing self-care, such as exercise, adequate rest, and stress management, enables you to better handle the challenges and stressors of the job. Remember, a healthy body and mind are essential for success in any career, including sales.
