Sausage Fest Workplace Newb

Sup everyone, so I come from medical, public health, and educational background. Great fields that lean a bit more towards women being the majority of the workforce.

Now in the sales space it's a see of men, makes me feel like I joined the Navy lol.

Question: anyone else relate to feeling a bit out of place? I love the jokes, I dig the energy, and have no issues with the testosterone boost I've been getting, but I don't know when to chest bump, I don't know when to shotgun a beer.

I'm here to work but also here to party, so send advice, insight, rants, raves.

haha sorry man, the whole BRO work culture is a bid no go for me.

If you are looking to fit in, just watch.

Watch what everyone else is doing, and if you like that, than just start doing what they do.

when there are happy hours just wait and see how crazy ppl get before you start throwing them back.

if people drink on fridays, let them go first and you follow.

this should help you get the vibe and not stand out haha

idk if thats what you are going for but just my thoughts

Hahaha you’re more dedicated than me.

If you want to fit in, Tennis has some great advice above.

I say be you…don’t give in to the pressure to fit in. Get to know your team/coworkers, get some drinks blah blah blah. But if it comes to changing who you are to feel like you need to fit in? Nobody got time for that.

It's changed a lot since I first started.   It used to be just me at any sales meeting.   It doesn't hurt that I actually enjoy sports (though the endless stat discussions are a no go for me) and don't feel the need to be holding my own during a brag fest.  In fact, I'd walk away from those.

Settle the chest bump question by replacing them with high fives, don't shotgun anything if you don't want to, just hang out and enjoy, and grow to know your team.  You'll find your place by being open and friendly.

I feel like the tech sales world is very heavily male dominated. It would be cool to see more females get into it though. I have a few female coworkers that are absolute killers!!

Yeah so this is my first Sales focus job. I’m a lot more people centered and person driven, so for sure a lot of the skills transfer to sales, but the energy is mad different

Don't know if you're a chick or a dude (not that I am assuming your gender...or even care).

Real advice - let your work and work ethic speak for itself.  It'll pay off in the end.

I relate, but also I've kind of always been an outlier, so I'm used to it.

I generally don't play the clubhouse games with the boys. Too much risk to future me to be fucking around at work.

Do I get made fun of for being a square by the Brodeo Clowns from time to time? Sure. But then again, I care more about my paycheck than being 'cool.'

Plus, then I don't have to share my single-malt sales scotch that I keep in my desk with everyone in the office who'd rather pound Bud Light.

Off the clock, sometimes I hang out and party. But I've developed a pretty reliable 'nope' radar over the years of seeing friends crash and burn due to poor decisions.

This is the way. Focus on being good at the job. You're there to make money, not make friends.

When promotion cycles come around performance is paramount. It's cool that Chad can shotgun 6 bud lights in 60 seconds but do the CEO and CFO care?

If Thaddeus Broptimus Prime is the CEO, you should re-think your life for accepting the job.

Also prepare your exit plan for the inevitable #metoo headlines.

See Activision, Uber, et al for reference.

Nah you want the Patagonia synchilla pullover in the craziest color scheme you can find, jeans, Cole haans, an Apple Watch or woop, Herschel backpack, and a personal electric scooter.

Lol we are wfh too. But…

*David Attenborough voice*

You can still see them all gathered outside the local pour over coffee shops in the morning, fully dressed up just to go back in their house for the rest of the day. It’s a fascinating mating display taken on by the younger males in an attempt to gain a mate, as they have yet to develop a unique personality so must resort on flashy colors to attract the attention of the groups of females returning from their morning Barry’s or Rumble classes

I have both the Patagonia vest and Synchilla pullover in ridiculous pattern. I typically pair them with some Lazerface sunglasses and my trucker hat that says 'Beer?' with an image of a bear with antlers on it.

But this is not what I wear to the office (if I had to go in...). Jeans, Brooks Brothers shirt, and boots are the game here (TX Biz casual).

Also, thanks for making me spill my coffee with the David Attenborough Voice comment! LOL

I miss TX biz casual. Nothing makes you feel more confident walking into a meeting than having some supple Luchese boots on your feet!

I'm rocking Ariat at the moment, but yes. Magnifies my already XL human size to the next level.

Also fun at stuffy conferences. People seem to think the professor look is far more approachable than a $3k suit with $900 shoes.

The online marketing and Agency space is a younger crowd lol, which makes sense since it’s a low overhead. But 100% I’ve enjoyed being an observer, I contribute, and more than anything have a goal and end game. Bit of professional culture shock at times, but a welcomed change of pace

I really thought seeing how well female sales reps were doing at building relations, personalizing, and driving actual closed pipe was going to be the end of my company's bro culture. Alas these badass women were mostly looked over for promotions and have moved on and it's now worse than ever.

My advice, advocate for more diversity internally and be a true ally. Successful companies need to quickly catch on to the fact that a workplace that feels inclusive to smart women and mature men creates way more value in the long run.

Thé women at my company are the highest performers and we honestly speak out - we are in a bro club but as long as there’s no malice or mal intent? It’s ok with me for the most part. And if they piss me off, they’ll hear about it. I gave up trying to fit in years ago but I understand how being new can be daunting - I’d sit back, get the lay of the land - absorb and figure out who and what you want to be in terms of this new place!! When I started here - they had a fridge full of beer only- now they understood maybe others like wine, coolers etc. We still gravitate to what the guys like more ie - if we go away they like to ski, golf etc, but now we have options of spa, etc. ( and yes I know girls ski and golf, just not the ones I work with ok!) Took time. But at no point would I let anyone make you feel you have to chest bump? Sounds painful. lol. 😎

If you live in Silicon Valley there are 4 dudes to 1 female in general. Move to Scottsdale or Miami. It is what it is and there needs to be more women applying for sales roles. While bro culture is a problem it’s because more bros are applying for these roles. And by “bro” I ’m assuming that you are saying white 20 something year old guys?

I came from an all-male sales team.  Honestly, it's more of the people and less of just the gender. I'm in a heavily male workforce now and the guys are way better. We can't stereotype men but I get where you are coming from. Sometimes you just don't fit in

Tech sales is a total sausage fest :( be ready to talk sports sportsball and gambling.  I do feel left out when the guys all go golfing with the VPs.  I don't know how to golf and I don't smoke cigars.  It's tough being a woman.  Seek out the other ladies in the company to make sure you get the right mentorship.
