SVB Implosion Summed Up

Here is a good explanation of what happened to one of the most widely used financial institutions across the tech industry.

If your payroll is run by Rippling for example, SVB powered their payments transactions. You might not be paid on time because some VCs got conspicuous and told everyone to pull their deposits.

As they say, the first move in Jenga sets the tone for the game, and the VCs pulled the bottom right piece to start.

Yes, this is the simple version. It is a little more complex than this and there were other things at play.

The top level play is what helps folks get their mind around the reality of what happened in the past 24. The full HBS case study is going to be fascinating.

Not really. Has to do with how a bank run happens, specifically when a large depositor pulls their bl funds and tells everyone else to. Kind of like the Assassination of Bear.

Ok…and how is the case study not going to be an interesting read? A bunch of mean girl VCs manipulated their portfolios into pulling funds, triggered a media frenzy, and killed a monolith. That’s a very interesting market manipulation impact study to me.

It's also a case on financial risk management of off-balance sheet assets and the impact that has on squeezing equity.

“Off balance sheet assets” really aren’t a factor with banks unless they own other companies. This run was based on marking assets lower due to change in rates.

No. It’s fucked.

However, I read that the FDIC moved all funds to another emergency institution to pull funds out Monday.

I know nothing about how all of this works so this might be a dumb question but what are the repercussions for the startups that had money there? Other than not paying their employees on time this next payroll

Gaining access to funds above $250k on deposit. This is a wait and see process for non-insured monies. May take a long time to gain access. Also, any company leveraging debt financing lines from SVB no longer have access to those funds. The loans are gone, and so are the funds. This was the best way to float without VC money.

Even if you’re not being directly impacted, odds are everyone in the WR will at least be indirectly impacted quite severely.

Pretty crazy in a digital world a few tweets from prominent people can cause a bank run. Now despite what Senator Mark Kelly might believe censorship is not the solution to fix this. Maybe fully reserved banks could help tho? Idk I'm not a banker.
