Thoughts on how other AEs are using LinkedIn

My company is starting anew initiative where they are hammering down on all reps really using LinkedIn messaging and is becoming "thought leaders". Curious what other AEs thoughts are on LinkedIn and how they leverage it.

You can't tell me how to use my personal accounts. Periodt.

Damn, where's that post about Bingo card squares - "thought leader" belongs there.

Anyway, I get a little salty when my employer thinks that my personal LI account, that I use for my own CV and positioning, is theirs for the using, and that they can tell me how to use my personal page to "drive engagement" or some other such stuff.

I agree it would be strange to have a company pushing you to do this but if you are passionate about the space you work in, I don't see why an AE/BDR wouldn't take advantage of a potential opportunity to build rapport with prospective employers.

Ugh I hate the whole "thought leader" pressure people are digging into these days.

LinkedIn is a great tool, but you have to think of it as a supporting player. It will help bring relevance and value to the conversation, but it is a not a meeting generating machine by any means.

Unless you're selling to LinkedIn influencers then this is a waste of time.

I would have to disagree - I would say it depends on your market. I sell for a SaaS tech company that deals with diversity initiatives. Building credibility in the space has made a real difference in my prospecting and calls.

I set 75% of my meetings through LinkedIn. I don’t post a single thing but it’s been a great way to cut through the noise for me.

Our “thought leadership” is practiced through messaging and not posting fyi

LinkedIn messages were great for a while. But that time was several years ago.

I have been dealing with this for almost a year now and it sucks. Once or twice a week, i reshare something that my company writes, just like everyone else, and I know it looks bad, but whatever. It won’t hurt and it keeps the C-suite off my ass

Makes me think of this post I saw the other day on LI.

Justin Welsh• FollowingBuilding a portfolio of one-person businesses to $5M in revenue.1d • 1 day ago Your company doesn't control your LinkedIn brand.

And here's 7 reasons why they never should:

1. Your brand compounds instead of starting over with each job.
2. Your brand stays with you regardless of where you work.
3. Your brand develops connections, not transactions.
4. Your brand becomes your resume over time.
5. Your brand unlocks new opportunities.
6. Your brand isn't controlled by HR.
7. Your brand is your safety net.

Don't build your brand around the company you work for.

They won't help you rebuild it when you're let go.

Remember?

I’m trying to just post content in general to build up my personal brand.

Will it help me get sales? Probably not directly but it’ll help people get familiar with my name when I email them.

I actually have spoken with some of the gong reps, they say it’s greatly helped their quota attainment but I’ll take that with a grain of salt…

hack: if someone says they're a thought-leader, they're not.
