War Room, have you ever been sold to?

How do salespeople buy from other salespeople?

I am an AE, who sells to a very specific persona/industry. I have a meeting with a company to explore a potential addition of their product to our tech stack that may or may not help me target my ICP better. I’m curious what it’s gonna be like in the hot seat as a buyer, when I know the typical “seller” cues.

Tell me about your best and worst experiences as the prospect! Bonus points if you learned something new that you could apply within your role from the person that was selling to you.

They call me Daddy, Sales Daddy
Selling to sales people is both the easiest and hardest sale to make. I can break down the sales process and I know most of the sales tricks/tactics out there. So in that respect, I'm a hard sale.
But I can get to the bottom line very quickly and I know my own pain points and I basically help the sales person sell to me. So in that I'm an easy sale.
So if you're selling to sales people, perhaps ask them to help you identify their self-perceived pain points. They will recognize and hopefully appreciate the effort to shorten the cycle and fluff it up with sales-BS.

Worst tactic I have ever experienced was a sales person booking a demo through our website and proceeding to use the booked time to try and pitch their services. Super lame 😒

I had someone try that on me via LI. Desperate times, I suppose.

It should be a good experience. You're on the buyer's end of discovery, so you should have your questions ready and be prepared to have a discussion. I don't view it as a hot seat as much as an opportunity to learn about a solution that should help your team, so approach it that way. Are you the only one from your company attending? If you are, have your answers to their questions ready - when you are going to pick a vendor, your buying process, etc. If you aren't, make sure you're on the same page as any colleagues on the phone so that you know who is going to be responsible for process, is the primary contact, etc.

When is your call?

Good one I dealt with - Person selling to myself did just a bit of research on the company I work for and they did a good job of highlighting what things they offer that would jive well with what we were offering and also did a good job of explaining who their own competitors were and didn't bash the competition but highlighted what they offered and what their differentiation was.
Rough/Bad ones - The person did some research on what we do but then took whatever knowledge they had and threw that shit out the window. Only focused on themselves and their company and pushed what their products were but didn't allow that to relate at all to what we are doing. They were 100% just reading off a canned demo that they had done 1000s of times before and didn't listen at all. It got to a certain point that I just had to stop it. It wasn't a waste of time but gave a great opportunity for the rest of my team in the call to see what they shouldn't be doing on a demo.
Not in tech industry but in distribution and we get to have vendors come in monthly to try and pitch us on why we should be selling their shit. The ones that I see that are worth a damn take the time to understand what their product offerings are and how they compliment what we do to be able to move that product fast.

Yes and hopefully you’ll be the easiest call of their day. I like dealing with other salespeople bc we speak the same language and at least I’m much more direct about needs, where I’m at in buying stage and what’s most important. Just be yourself and be honest. I have experienced a TERRIBLE sales call before though - painful to see an inexperienced rep awkwardly try to drive urgency and ask repetitive questions, not listen well, etc.

I’m kind of tough on other sales people tbh, probably shouldn’t be, but if you’re going to try to pitch me on something and you cannot answer basic questions or listen to what my concerns are why are you wasting my time?

Listen my local tennis store absolutely CRUSHED the sale recently. Identified my needs, gave the sentiment that I got a deal, and offered some free grips.
I still got smoked 6-1, but hey, my racquet is amazing.

I'm usually wiling to give them the time of day if it's something I'm potentially interested in and the respect of a reply if I know it's not a good fit. Gotta respect the hustle and empathize.
