What is the most important attribute an overachieving salesperson possesses?

Had a conversation with a recruiter who said the hiring manager was wanting someone with strong product knowledge, as he felt this was key to overachieving in the role. I always looked for likeability, because you can know everything and be disliked because of it........people buy from people they like.

If I had to pick one trait of overachievers is that they're always hard (and smart) workers, and have a lot of grit. They're willing to put the time in to hone their skills, they're out there proactively seeking opportunity, and they don't get discouraged by inevitable setbacks and negative experiences.

That, and lack of a soul.

Flexibility, ability to listen and map customer requirements to solution, ability to rebound when hurdles arise, and a killer instinct.

Product knowledge absolutely plays a part - you have to understand how your solution works in order to make sure that you can convey the value to your target.ย  ย I'd agree that likeability plays a role, you do have to listen to a customer and understand what matters to them, but a rep also has to keep their company in mind and be ruthless at drawing a line during negotiations.ย  ย ย

I think it's dependent on your target buyer, I think likeability is important because as much as I hate the saying people buy from people they like, it is true. and never saying die can burn more bridges than you would like.
