Wtf is it with old people and wanting to steal leads/deals?

In every sales job I have ever had some old person just couldnt or wouldn't keep mixing up their contact with existing deals or assigned leads.

I just got asked by this old person new to my company "I saw X person is assigned to you, how would you like me to approach them? Are you getting anywhere? I do realize they're in a sequence of yours."

I did my best to be polite and say "fuck off" with more words.

For me it’s always been the young dumb and full of bright ideas reps that come blasting in with their grubby little hands in everybody’s shit on week one. Barely out of on-boarding and they’re sniffing around my biggest deals that are already halfway to closing asking “should I approach????”

I feel like that’s just bad management in onboarding. There should be a clear definition of that.

Older salespeople? Boomers? Should know better

Clearly defined and documented rules of engagement solves all of this. If the rep has some miles on their shoes then they likely want to flex those rules and claim ignorance with a side of “back in my day” for good measure.

Be blunt and be direct in how things work from a profess standpoint. Anything beyond that falls on management.

I read your title and just assumed you're a salesperson who works out of an old folks home and the old people keep grabbing your lists of leads.

Poachers exist in every sales company.  Entitlement typically stems from veteran reps who don't have much gas in the tank, but know how to work the system.  They have a deep understanding of internal systems and processes, but most importantly.... GREY AREAS!

Honestly - most of us live in the grey, but there is a difference between bending the rules to get a sale and high-jacking a newbie for a split that shouldn't be given.

My advice - ask your manager or director how you should handle things like that.  What are the policies?
Don't be a snitch - but prep yourself with the ammo you need to give the invisible middle finger.

I don’t get how age plays into being an entitled asshole? We have younger reps who are just as entitled ..and older reps who … well they fall asleep at their desk so maybe just feel entitled for a nap? Sounds like the rules of engagement are the issue, not the number of grey hairs?

I’m so curious how you define “old” 😆😆

Really old school sales was pretty cutthroat. Those guys worked off of black books and Rolodexes. No way for Bob in the next office to know you were trying to snake his client. It was more of a "whoever gets em first" attitude.

I imagine a lot of older sales folks still feel that way. Despite you clearly being able to see they just emailed a contact in an account that you've been actively working.

I would just be straight up about it. "Yeah that's my account don't touch it."

sales is still (or can be) very cutthroat.  Unless you have a very strongly defined territory, sales people are always going to be opportunistic and grab what then can.

And you don't have to be "old" to fall into that category.

I’m just not going to work on a team where people don’t understand devolving into that shit is a slippery slope to everyone hating each other and shit getting fucked up on pipeline forecasting.

Not sure what you mean by old?  Experienced and more capable?  Sales people are always going to be opportunistic.  And if there is ambiguity in existing deals &/or assigned leads, it sounds like that's a "your problem" thing.

I guess I should ask if you're like 17 and think Mad Men is what "old school sales" is like?
