[Advice] What is my market value? Asking for a raise, what salary to expect. Compensation tables inside (SDR, AE, CSM, Managers).

It's been about 2 years since covid started and salaries for tech sales have increased about 15%-20%. It's a great time (and friendly reminder) to re-evaluate, ask for raises, pit it against offers, and know your market value.

Go talk with the recruiters who are spamming your inbox and know your worth. Take the interviews and assemble a few offer letters. (If anything, great interview and negotiation practice!).

Betts Recruiting came out with their 2022 Tech Sales compensation guide (free to download) to give you an idea. I'll paste the most interesting tables below (SDR, AE, CSM, Managers - sorry marketing).

With inflation and the great resignation, we're well-positioned to ask for raises and adjust our salaries (provided you've been crushing your numbers).

This is just one piece of info for the salary ask. By all means, go look up salaries on other sites like RepVue and Compguage.

Don't back down if managers are taken back by your request. Knowledge is power and you'll be going in armed with offer letters and sources. If they really value you, they will understand that the market has changed and at least match your offer or better. If not, time to say good-bye and go where you're loved!

----------------------------

Personally, I was surprised at how much our salaries have jumped. I realized I was being underpaid at my old job. I interviewed at 3 other places, got offer letters, proved my performance, and cited my sources. With all that leverage, the original employer ended up matching my offers but in the end, I left for something more. I hope this knowledge will give you all the confidence to know how valuable you are. Feel free to share this info with your colleagues. It will get the conversation started and there is power in numbers! The more you all make, the more the whole tech sales community will make!

I am disgusted. Not least by how badly Canadians get fucked on comp… why are there metrics for customer success in here?

What do we look like to you? Cowards?

Jokes aside, thanks for sharing.  I told my CEO right in front of the American Ambassador to Brazil  that he would be sponsoring my Visa in the near future.  ‘Murica here i come.

Shit, how did I miss this?! This is gold. SOLID post @looper

Also, had no idea what Compgauge was until this and I already like it better than RepVue! But the combination of RepVue, Compgauge, Glassdoor, and Payscale can help you really get a solid number to stand on & negotiate from.

In your experience @looper1010 , is it even worth going to your current manager to prove your worth? I'm kind of in this boat right now and I feel like even if I do get a stellar offer and they match, I've already moved on since I've been looking at other companies.

- professional growth is huge for me and my deals are super fast and very transactional right now (also very small). I want to work my way to MM and eventually ENT. I'm not going to do that here, so despite if they give me everything I want comp wise, it's time to go.

Again, well done. Thanks for this.

Thanks for the feedback, @bandabanda ! Re: worth going to your manager - it truly depends on what you want and how you feel.  From your post, it sounds like you're looking for room to grow and a new challenge.

In the end, if you plan on leaving for the better offer, I'd still go to your manager and talk about it.  At this point, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.  You might be surprised at how desperate they become.  If anything, this will give you negotiation practice with TC (total comp) and if they end up increasing their offer - the competitor offer might up their ante too.  If anything, this gives you more leverage.  Have the offers bid against each other.  This helped me land a bigger salary.

PS - remember to check your work's policy on leaving.  I saw in another post how someone was let go when they put in their 2 weeks notice.  Read those docs that HR made you sign.

"Have the offers bid against each other."  - was it stressful to handle multiple interviews and get multiple offers while doing your current job? How many offers did you have at once?

Also, did you end up getting into Cyber Security?

YES, it was quite stressful.  I was doing interviews during my lunch block and juggling multiple interviewers with my work schedule.  I had to learn their platform, their pitch for presentation, etc.  It was not easy but well worth it.  I eventually took the company that does IT consulting with a specialty in security and compliance.

@looper1010 quick question. How do you tell a company that you're waiting to sign the offer (because you're waiting on other potential offers). Obviously asking how you say this in a professional way without shooting yourself in the foot? lol

I don't let them know I have other offers until I'm ready for the bidding war.  They usually ask when can you start during the interview and that's when you should plan appropriately.  If you need some extra days, set the call up on Friday so you have the weekend to think it over.  Say you need to talk it over with your family since it's a major life decision.

Or you can say you have 1 more major deal that you need to close before you can leave.  We're in sales and they understand how commission works. Try to have your deadline first but you can ask what their deadline is like and play it by ear

Thanks for the info. I’m looking to improve my base and package at current company as Dir. Enterprise Solutions. Seeing this made me throw up in my mouth. I’ve out sold the entire team by 400% and it’s time to earn more.
