Are a husband and wife in sales, a match made in commission heaven, or a no-no?

Long story short - I`ve been encouraging my wife for a long time now to make a career shift, and take on sales - she finally found a great opportunity for an entry-level full-cycle sales rep and took it!

My question: do you see this as a good move for a married couple, or not? - Only the wrong answers please ๐Ÿ˜…

Would love to see how many of you savages share the S.A.D.N.E.S.S. with your spouse ๐Ÿ˜

My wife makes more money than me, and it doesnโ€™t bother me for a second. She owns a services based business with a small team. If we were both software people I donโ€™t think we would be so nice to each other 3-4 times a year for about a week.

Wouldn`t know for software developers, but she`s in sales for a month now - so far so good :D

Same. My wife will probably rejoin the workforce once our kids are all in school (probably like 8-10 years out lol) but is stay-at-home momming for now.

Keeps the pressure on me, but I'd much rather have her at home during our children's formative years.

I don't think she'd go back to teaching though, probably an admin role within education.

I know couples who are both in sales, but they never worked together.

That is a horse of a different color my friend.

Noo, we`re not in the same company. I see how I might not have been clear with the post. She`s working for a different company, with a different type of products and markets :) I would never want us to work for the same company, that`s way too much risk (of all kinds)

I feel like when dating people in the same industry, you just wind up bitching to each other a lot and work really carries over to home.

I have friends that met in school, got married, and are both in sales. They complained when it was hard to buy a house 6 or 7 years ago because of the way commission is treated by banks for mortgages. But they are living the life now.

I had that exact same problem 8 years ago, luckily enough, my bank took into account the commission as well (with a certain discount, I forgot the exact %).

I'm venting out my sales pressure to my wife, so how she could vent out hers to me, if we're both at the same ... ๐Ÿ˜…

Ok, now it looks like i haven`t thought this through enough :D you got a point there! Maybe I`m a bit lucky, my wife is super chill, and she`s handling cold calling for this first month like a champ, so maybe I still get to vent as usual too๐Ÿ˜…

My partner is a brand manager, so technically does lots of sales, just not pure cold calling.

She's killing it, has a great team and gets to travel a bunch.

That`s a good match too, sales & brand management. Have they helped you with your personal brand somehow maybe?

Undoubtedly so...she has extremely sharp analytical skills, just freezes up at the idea of a cold call.

Funny because that is something to me that feels entirely natural.

Different skills. No reason I should be paid nearly as close to what she's getting lol, but that's the world we live in.

Sounds like you're at different companies, and so if she has the aptitude for it and it works out, good for you.

Yes, different companies, both with remote first work which comes as a blessing with toddler twins getting sick monthly:) so far so good!

My wife did Cutco before we got married and early in our marriage. She rocked it, but hated it. She's one of those people you just naturally trust, which is probably why she stayed long enough to get a ton of free knifes and then quit.
She *could* rock a sales job, but doesn't.

I think it depends really. As sales people, our pay tends to be pretty volatile with crazy months and dry spells. My fiancรฉ has a salary job with consistent paychecks. Having that consistency, even though itโ€™s less money than I make, is definitely nice to help keep things โ€œnormalizedโ€ as far as expenses go without having to dip too heavily into savings or at all if I have a slow month/quarter.

She also would be horrible at sales though so itโ€™s not even really an option to consider for us ๐Ÿ˜‚

Agree, and Iโ€™m lucky enough to have a higher base, if it wasnโ€™t for that Iโ€™d never recommend her getting i sales :)

My wife and I are both in sales at the same company. For awhile she was my SDR and it was amazing! Cannot tell you the buy in you get to run late meetings or travel or do uncomfortable things for deals when itโ€™s their deal too. She now runs our sales enablement for the whole team and itโ€™s even better.

What was your first sales role that made you realize you were born to do this? Mine was girl scouts and moving way more cookies than the rest of my fellow brownies
