I think when you work in sales and deal with massive amounts of bullshit to meet the expectations of your clients, your tolerance for bad customer service goes down and you also realize just how many truly awful sales people are out there, so yeah, I get it.

This. It just becomes easier to recognize shitty sales tactics, so imo, to sell to salespeople is the hardest job

I only answer the door if itโ€™s a kid and I see a scout outfit. Everything else, nope. I donโ€™t want to be converted or sold to. I donโ€™t get many D2D reps though, because I live on a hill that is no joke to climb.

Those poor folks whose job is s to sell solar, cellular, pots and pans at Costco. Painful to watch them try..

As a person who went to Home Depot to buy a replacement toilet seat and came out with an appointment with a solar rep - it does work.

Also, very happy with the decision to go solar, FWIW.

We were ready - and thereโ€™s something about HD that makes that kind of thing interesting. My first question was about making the cost make sense - which they did. The only reason we hadnโ€™t done it sooner was that the cost was too high for the technology. By the time the system was paid off, youโ€™re looking at replacement. Not the case these days.

It was a soft sell at the right time. No pressure. Not salesy.

I also feel for the Costco guys, but kind of help them out by answering their โ€œsolar?โ€ With a โ€œwe have it already and love itโ€ in earshot of others.

I know most of the tricks so when I need something I do my research first and usually know exactly what I want and the price Iโ€™ll pay. I donโ€™t have much patience. Iโ€™ll walk pretty quick too.

I'm not opposed to buying things from sales people. But I decide to buy based off the quality of the pitch. The cell phone guy at costco has yet to earn my business even though I actually need a phone. The dude just won't improve his pitch.
The meat truck guy though. OMG! I went there to buy some $25 thing and spent $300 100% because I was gonna buy meat anyway, and the guys pitch was perfect.

Depends. I'll wait for someone to sell me something that I need or want sometimes and if they do a good job then I'll buy it. I get occasional financial newspaper sellers so might subscribe.Or maybe a phone. Electrical bill.

Or restaurant, if they know their wines and food and match it then I'll leave a tip (not mandatory as in US)
Otherwise no. And door to door sales never unless it's a kid.

Great sales mentor/trainer of mine had a sign on his office building door that read "no BAD soliciting." He would invite anyone in that read the warning and still choose to proceed. He'd listen to every pitch. Obviously 99% ended with a humbling sales lesson.
Most of us can't stand listening to bad/inexperienced reps because we've spent our entire careers trying to not sound like that and use 'those' tactics.
