Business Boggles My Mind Sometimes

So Steven Bartlett (the self-acclaimed Happy Sexy Millionaire) who is on UK Dragons Den and the Founder of Social Chain in the UK has just sold his company for GBP7.7m.

What i dont get is this company had a valuation of $300m just a couple years ago.

The made a loss of $100k on a revenue of $14m last year apparently and have 122 staff. How on earth does a company which only turns over $14m employ 122 people?!? Mind boggling, ive worked at companies who turn-over the same and more as that with less than 20 staff.

Just needed somewhere other than LI to vent my disbelief in this and shows how screwed many "unicorn" business are, especially those in marketing.

Also I enjoy knowing the fact that theres so many secret millionaires out there (maybe even here) who quietly run businesses making and selling real product, pulling in 15%+ net profit on revenues of $20m and more and not talking about it, i love it.

That's why VC valuations are like a Sales person's OTE. Infer what you want from there.

Founders are usually stupid. Iโ€™m never really sure how they got out of a basement or garage with the business most times

Valuation is just what one party wants to pay at one point in time. However this valuation can be just to high because they are willing to over pay.

Also free money last few years and crazy VC's that love certain industries and dream of extreme growth

Allegedly he had multiple companies that got spun out (ex subsidiaries) and one of them got sold for $15m. Check out Sam Parr on Twitter โ€“ he calls out Steve Bartlett

You just had an awesome proposal call, but everyone is going back to their busy lives. What do you do to keep that momentum alive, especially over a long sales-cycle?
