Can I accept an offer and quit a week in?

Hey Savages,

As you may already know from my previous post. I got a job offer that is not ideal but I am in desperate need for a new role.

I got some promising interviews coming up 2 final rounds, 2 second rounds, and about 4 initial conversations lined up.

This company gave me until tomorrow to give them an answer. I will not have other option on the table yet.

Would it be terrible if either:

  • Take the offer and withdraw before my start date
  • Take the offer and quit 2 weeks in

I don't want to decline the offer without having any other offer on the table, that is why I am asking.

I've done it myself, and had people do it to me. It comes with the territory. You do you

You are right, we often care about the company when they wouldn't give a flying fuck about us.

yeah, but sometimes there are good people there and I don't like messing them around. Last year I flipped the table and stress-quit, accepted another offer, then my boss promoted me so I stayed (right choice for sure). I then called the would-be new boss right away and laid it out, and we are still on good terms

Better to do it a week in than a month in. Doesn’t even have to go on the resume

Yes, AND you don’t HAVE to burn a bridge.

It’s not going to look good by any means, but sell it, if you care enough that is.

”I’m really sorry, I wanted to do this before I got to deep into things. I’ve realized this is the perfect fit for me, and I didn’t want to waste your guys’ time. I am genuinely grateful for the opportunity, but I need to do right by the company and walk away now. I hope this will not tarnish my reputation in your eyes, because I will remember my time at ____ very positively…. DEUCES”

Or some such similarly fragrant bull manure

I need a job asap, that's why I'm asking. Don't want to risk declining this offer and then taking a month to get a new offer.

do you REALLY think they will pull the offer away? seems like a classic sales tactic "price goes up at the end of the month" kinda thing.

BUT

you can 100% quit after a week! haha they would fire you after 2 weeks if they wanted to!

ALWAYS look out for your self, protect your self, and find the best place to work.

Like @Pachacuti said....you will for sure burn that bridge so just make sure your ok with that.

You can accept the offer and not even start, granted your state is an employment at will state. You are not held to anything.

This is an absolutely terrible idea. The tech world is small, everyone knows everyone, reputation gets around.

Case in point: I did a blind reference on a candidate where I learned he had pulled a stunt like this. We didn't make him an offer.

2nd case in point: I had this happen to me once in 14 years. Person emailed the night before start date to say he wasn't coming. We not only had to scramble to fill role, explain to rest of company what happened, and call up candidates we had said told the position was filled to restart process. Really hurt our business and team.

Don't be a schmuk. Act with integrity in your career. It's a small ass world.

Appreciate your POV, especially being on the other side of it.

Thankfully I found a good offer and didn't have to pully any stunts like this.
