Commission after quitting??

I'm an AE currently and just accepted a new AE position at another organization. I put in my resignation and I'm continuing to work until my start date at this new company. My last day is before March 18th which is when February commissions are paid out. My commission check is supposed to be a few thousand, but I've heard from former employees that they weren't paid the commission they were owed when they left.

Is this normal? I'm wondering if I should fight for that commission or take the L and move on.

Most companies wonโ€™t pay you if you quit before the payment date but it should be laid out clearly in your comp plan. If it is not, ask HRย

Read your comp plan, thatโ€™s a legally binding contract.

Yes it's normal. You need to read your new hire paperwork.

Your comp plan is the word of the lord in this situation.

@funcouponsย just posted something on this I think.ย  What I typically see is companies won't pay commission if you quit, but they will if you get fired.ย  Just start sucking and maybe they'll fire you within the next 2 weeks!

Yup, feedback from that post is that it seems to be 50/50 as to whether companies will pay you out after you've quit. Usually it's in your written contract.ย

If it's not stated in the contract or if it says no comm after departure, you've kind of missed your window to negotiate once you've put in notice...they know you're leaving so the company has zero motivation to make you happy anymore.

Have you asked your manager or RevOps team?

yeah review your comp plan. Unless it specifically says you WONT get it, you 100% SHOULD get it and should reach out to HR if you dont.ย

cant miss out on that ๐Ÿ’ฐ

At this point your golden handcuffs are gone as you've put in your resignation. Depending on your state and compensation plan you can/might be able to get paid but honestly it might just be water under the bridge at this point.

Read. Your. Comp. Plan. If itโ€™s commission it is owed to you by law. If your company doesnโ€™t want a painful lawsuit theyโ€™re best paying you out.ย

Totally depends on the contract. Always always always look first!

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract
Companies also usually pay as soon as you threaten to file a complaint with the Department of Labor for wage theft.

If the company does not live up to your compensation agreement, file with your state workforce and then file a small claims lawsuit.
