Counter to a rejection email

What is a good way to send an email to the hiring manager for a position you interview for, but were rejected, if you still want to work for them but in a different role? Let's say you applied for strategic AE and were rejected, but you know they have a territory position or industry AE role that would also like. Especially if the other role isn't posted yet.

That’s likely the best route. Tone can be lost in text and I really want to work for this company.

How far did you get in the interview? Did you talk to a recruiter and/or hiring manager, or did you just get a "thanks but no thanks" email after applying?

Internal recruiter, who gave me great advice, and then hiring manager.

Call the recruiter and see if they can put you in touch with hiring manager for upcoming territory AE role. You'll have the inside track.

hmm this is really interesting. I would hope that if they think you would be a good fit for another role they would ask you about it.

But in this situation I would give them a call and ask. If thats not an option I would just email the hiring manager and thank them for the opportunity and thank them for getting back to you. Then ask about the additional roles and see if they would consider you for that role.

see what they say

He has pitched another role one during my interview. It’s probably a better fit anyway, but I was clear I wanted the position I already applied for during my close.

ok thats good.

So i would respond and let him know that after thinking more about your conversations the other role that he mentioned would be something you would be interested in.

I would mention that although you were excited about the first role, you can see there are many positives to the other role and being able to join the organization in that way would still be a great fit.

see what he says

Sounds like they might be interested in you - so I'd follow the advice and connect with your interviewer.

I'd also reach out to the recruiter to get you in touch with the other hiring manager as well.  Can't hurt.

You could ask for a feedback call and bring up wanting a different role on that call...

I don’t have his number and this may be the best option rather than going through internal recruiter.

Feedback call allows you to see why they didn't move you forward and if they felt you were a good fit somewhere else you are likely to get a better feel on the call.

reach out to the hiring manager and ask. "Hey manager thank you for taking the time to consider me for this role. I know at this time I'm not a great fit because of X reason (if you have that, if not, ask why you weren't a great fit). But I saw you now have a posting for role Y and I believe it would be a much better fit because of reasons a, b, and c. When do you have a few minutes free to discuss further?

Treat it just like if a prospect rejects you because they don't have a need right now, you're too expensive, whatever. Find another approach that makes you seem like something they do need and worth the money.

“Rejection” indicates they didn’t want you at all. Assuming that is not the case, Do you know why they went with someone else over you?

No, but I will ask the question. Rejection being just their canned email.

Its an important differentiation.  Not getting the job may feel like a rejections when in reality they simply choose between 2 people who were nearly identical - and you weren't it.  They may really like you, or may not.  You need to find that out.

hmmm...I have a rule of thumb, that if I am not wanted, I will move else where. but id prob call if I really Really wanted it and it was worth the pay.

I did and it was. But I’ll look for a territory position instead that’s a better fit.
