Cyber security or Fintech?

Bit of a random one,

I'm looking for a new job and have offer from one and second one in super keen to hire me but the process is ongoing. I'm wondering if there's any experience here on both - what industry could be better for a sales rep?

Looking to hear from fintech, cyber security reps and perhaps if there's anyone who's done both?

Both are solid industries with huge TAM and bright outlook. Not nearly enough information provided to advise one way or the other. Since both industries are great, go with the better company with the better product(s) with the better leadership team.

i think its WAY to hard to say just based on industry. its really more based on the company within the industry that can make a bigger impact on a seller.

which company do you like better?

You never know which company will collapse but if you ask me which industry - I will always vote for Cyber Security from sustainability point of view :)

Best to listen to your heart and go with your gut feeling.

personally I love the security space. You're selling a "need to have" product that can truly save a businesses ass. Its also somewhat insulated from layoff's/recessions due to being a need to have product. When other companies are doing mass layoffs you generally won't be hit quite as hard.

Only if it's a good security product. Plenty of "nice to have" security tools out there.

When do you need to respond to the first offer? And is it a good one?

You could ask the super keen one when they expect an offer and use the fact that you have another offer already to see if you can get them to move. Then you'll really have a decision to make. But until that offer is in hand, it's not "real".

IT usually has insane budgets, it's mostly a "need-to-have" and with rare pushback (as those who work in IT aren't the negotiating types and generally the CEO has no clue what IT even does anyways).

FinTech will always sell you the dream on TAM, etc (let's start a water company, everyone drinks water, so that means the TAM is everyone in the world!!). Unless their product is exceptional, you'll be fighting constant uphill battles with no defined timelines and there's always another competitor willing to ankle bite you.

Overall it depends what type of product / service and who you're selling to... No one can compete with Bloomberg, but there's 100s of payment processing companies for restaurants.

Also the differences in product offerings are very apparent to IT groups as they generally have to be knowledgable. But I've sold into too many CEOs that didn't know the difference between Salesforce and their Yahoo account.

Buyers of fintech products tend to be older / different generation and will scoff at the idea of software (if that's what you're selling), however selling cyber services, there's always a need at every level of firm regardless of how good or bad your product is.

Cyber will be much more insulated in opinion. Companies always need to secure their data. They never want to be the company leading the news cycle that all of their customers personal information is now stolen.
