Going from SDR to BDR

Hey there,

I've been in SaaS for around 10 months, loving it so far, as a SDR at a pretty small but established company. I feel like there's not much opportunity to apply for promotion to AE and I'm worried about future growth. I make around $60k OTE, and I recently found out an AE is only making $75k OTE. Across the entire sales team, we have a capped 150% commission.

I recently got (and accepted) and offer for a BDR role at a much larger company with a more established team (a full BDR team with BDR Manager/etc), 4 day work week, with a $90k OTE and uncapped commission.

Both my current role and the new one are 1 day per week in office, otherwise "work where you work best".

I know everyone is always talking about the "SDR/BDR to AE cycle" resetting factor but the opportunity here seems way more worthwhile, right? How can I turn down an additional $30k now, right? Just looking for some experts to back me up on this haha, especially since I haven't given my notice yet; and while we're at it, any tips for transitioning from inbound to outbound?

your OTE is $60K??? that seems insanely low.ย

take the money.ย

And report back on how a 4 day work week effects sales.ย

I think much of the advice in not going from SDR to BDR or BDR to BDR is when the upside is not there, such as a significant OTE bump, or when the BDR has significant years of experience and is at the stage where moving to AE is really the best step.ย  In your case, that's a great bump and a different process (outbounding) that will be of value to you in your sales career.ย  ย I can't advise you on the transition from inbound to outbound, except to say that you will have to do more research on your target accounts and ICP so that your messaging will resonate.

Thanks so much! Thatโ€™s really reassuring, and very true - a lateral change makes less sense when itโ€™s without much increase. I have been reading all of the general outbound guides and messaging so I feel pretty excited to get started and really taking control of how much I can make!

What is the base for each role?

I'd suggest you make the jump, you noticed there is not a path for growth and you are getting paid shit so I'd say it's time to leave.

Advice on inbound to outbound: Get prepared to call more, do more research, and focus on your opening line when cold calling.

Calling on inbound is easy cause you have a reason to reach out (Download, Demo, etc.) on outbound you got about 10 seconds to sound relevant and get the chance to continue the convo and hopefully get the meeting.

Base at current is $53k variable $8k, (so with the 150% cap it can only be $12k variable max) and the BDR role is $60k base $30k variable, no cap.

Thanks! I am planning to move forward with it, definitely I think thereโ€™s a learning curve but Iโ€™m pretty engaging and want to keep growing.

+30K OTE, that's a no brainer. BDR is quite an exciting job if you do it well, keep yourself organised and work closely with your AE. Never forget you always need two things to be successful:
- Find new opportunities
- Be loved by your AEs and help them crush their numbers
I've done both (AE and BDR) and working with BDR I've always been very surprised they barely ask what's the goal for the AE and his ACV ambitions. Make sur you know how they get paid, be aware of every spiff, event they could benefit from. They have, like your customers, to become your best friend.ย

It can sound quite basic and it is. Your success will come from that!

And start preparing for your next move on the very first day to avoid staying a BDR forever.ย

It's going well!! Definitely was the right choice to make, I've gotten a lot more out of this role and although it was pretty overwhelming initially, it's started to feel more natural. It's definitely a grind and I gotta keep grinding lol
