Have you had to choose between $$$ and a company you care about?

A couple of months ago I left a really amazing company with incredible product and vision.

I left because my role was pretty much made irrelevant based on a change in GTM.

I joined a new company and increased my base by $30K. PUMPED about it.

BUT

the only company made some big changes that they had been talking about that I didn think would happen.

They want me to come back.

If im being honest, i would LOVE to come back. the work is exciting and has the potential to make a BIG impact.

BUT

They wont match my salary. And we are not even close (At least yet)

Im pretty sure I will choose the money over working for a company I actually am excited about.

Am I crazy?

How much would you $$ would you give up to work for a company you care about?

I loved my previous employer until I didn't.ย  ย They didn't pay me adequately, and the GTM became awful.ย  ย It was painful, to say the least, but it became apparent that they had morphed into a company that no longer cared about every one of their employees, and so I took care of myself by moving on.

They have asked me to return.

They can no longer afford me.

I wish them well, but I'm now earning what I need to in order to take care of myself and my family, and am able to contribute to causes I care about.ย  ย Sorry to say, but taking care of yourself financially is important, and don't fall into the loyalty trap.ย  I'd tell your previous employer "thank you for the interest, but until you can match or exceed what I currently have, I have to respectfully decline your offer.ย  I'll be happy to connect again when you're able to meet my salary requirements".

Money is respect in this instance. You will go back with less pay and a chip on your shoulder? Nah.

Yes, but then I learned that what I thought was caring was more just fear of change and holding on to an idea of what the company could be rather than the shit/shambles it actually was.

I didn't see this until I left though and closed my first big deal. Until then I was sweating bullets.

Change is hard, but we need it to grow.

@TennisandSalesย - did this way early in my career. joined a non-profit to make "an impact". the dirt I saw there was worse than corporate. came back and joined sales. life is way more sorted now. Learnt it the hard way - the only way to care about someone/something else - is to care about yourself first.

As long as the current company doesn't completely blow I'd stay because of the money. If you want to feel fulfilled, find a hobby you enjoy.

I left a company I liked for greener pastures and I like the new company even more. Sometimes its easy to become attached a company or product, I think its a good idea to get out your comfort zone + get some more money.ย

I would say at this stage in my life just because I am young I care more about money than my happiness in a role but in the future I think it would choose the job that makes me happier and that I enjoy more.ย

i totally get that.ย

I would also think about what job will set you up better for the future.ย

what ever you make right now, and what ever job you take next, should be the LEAST amount of money you ever make in your career.ย

So think about what job will provide me the skills I need to make the next big step in my career.ย

That base increase is dope - congrats on that!

Iโ€™d say that you canโ€™t buy a sailboat with your feelings or โ€œmaking an impact.โ€ You can make a much larger impact if youโ€™re rich - most people never sign the front of a pay check, much less large checks to orgs and causes you care about. Get your money fam.

Cool companies donโ€™t help you buy more cocaine or strippers. Take the money.
