Hey, did anybody have a hard time at their first sales Sdr position?

10 months in and i barely scored the company money. My AE was a lone wolf made the most money for the company that year but i may have heard from her like once a week for 15 min ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ.ย

constant updates to the sales process, new management, Odd director, and just a mess in a few ways.ย

some of my team did really well despite all this. But that only gave me imposter sindrome.ย

was able to land some sales but i was struggling honestly. my biggest claim to fame was landing a rockerfeller deal in mid market. Although i reached maybe 50% of quota on average with the occasional 75-80%ย

I like sales, but how long until it starts to click. I failed upwards though and gonna work for a large enterprise company starting july 10th. I want this job to go better .ย

Any advice?ย

Unfortunately it's a necessary right of passage. If I could back to those days, I would tell me myself to not get as discouraged, and really focus on honing skills.

Ultimately sales is largely about conversations. The more quality ones you have, the better off you'll be...

I had really tough time in my first BDR position. I was scared to ring people and just always just below average. I quit 10 month in... wish I would have stayed. Did something else and then was hired as AE. Lucky really. Give it 1,5 years

I am sure everyone has hard times. I was struggling when I got to be a part of tech industry. However, I knew I wanted to be an AE because I already did that job in non tech. My AE was very busy too but that never stopped me from speaking to other folks in the org who did sales before. Learn, be motivated and keep patience :)

First BDR role was rough. Your relationships with internal people (ie AE's, managers, SEs, etc) is honestly half the battle to success. I realized this about 3 months in and really started to use my working hours to improve those relationships. Once I was in good with the AEs and managers (we got along and eventually liked each other) we actually made time for each other and had great account plans/execution, which equals more sales for you. I will say though the I had to "prove" myself to get their respect in order to have time made for me. Keep it up though! Good luck on the new position.

Is there an SDR on your team who is really solid and killing it? Can you shadow for a bit, pick up their knowledge? Connect with more than one if you can; everyone has a bit different approach, and over time, you'll land on something that works best for you.

Also ask to shadow your AE. It's a great way to build rapport, but also learn more and get better.

this position is remote by the way so itโ€™s not the easiest to shadow which i guess makes it a bit harder

A lot of times it depends on the situation, some SDR's have great experiences their first time around, most don't. I was fortunate to be one of the good experiences and got out quick

When I entered, there was no such thing as a BDR. All was full cycle. But, I'm old and often irrelevant as a result.

Being an SDR is tough. So is being an AE. The key is to have a Growth Mindset (Stanford Prof Carol Dweck wrote the book). Learn from adversity and have a Not there yet mindset. It is like baseball if you hit .300 you are good. If you hit .300 with a lot of Loud Outs and Big Fly you are great.

Embarrassing to ask but how do you find a new AE sales job? I'm an AE (5 years exp)...
