Hit the Cap on my BDR Salary but SMB AE team is jumping ship?

Hi team, APAC senior BDR here.

Hitting/exceeding targets regularly here and have reached limits on salary in terms of monthly commission can't really scale beyond where I am now.

Looking at SMB ae but the ANZ team is rapidly jumping ship, SMB and MM AE both left within 2 weeks of each other, BDR's are being called to help generate pipeline and they have a new manager. All in all the commercial AE team looks like a bit of a mess.

Manager says to chill until things are sorted both recession wise and until this AE fiasco gets sorted.

Try to take the spot of the leaving SMB ae or chill and exceed quota as BDR before things get fixed?

From career progression I would
always look at becoming an AE as I love closing. Whats your goals are?

There seems to be a communication gap here from your manager as you seem to have communicated that you want to help by rising to the AE challenge but got pushed off with "well, give it a year +".

That's not what was literally said but the recession talk implies that. Have another conversation specifically about rising to a AE and how you can do that. If your manager isn't willing to have that conversation, plenty of companies are.

try to get to AE. its the best thing for your career to try and get closing experience. if the company wants you to stay as a SDR thats because they dont want to hire another SDR haah

Blow it up
IMO any place that has a cap on earnings is just positioning itself as a stepping stone employer.

Why would you cap your best staff? Likely the same kind of fuckery is making the AE team bolt.

Also "chill until this recession is sorted" is dumb when peeps exceeding quota are asking for more responsibility and your company is bleeding reps.

AE is still your best bet.

If you exceed quota, what's in it for you?

And if your goal is to be AE, sounds like there are openings - if you can get to the bottom of why the team is jumping ship and it isn't for reasons that would make moving to that team a bad idea.

Definitely let them know you are VERY interested in the AE job. If you don't they will never promote you.

Great job consistently killing it, curious what are your long term goals within sales? Is closing part of it?

Are you familiar with the comp difference between the two roles? Is there a difference between base?

Would it be possible to jump immediately to MM? Typically MM has a higher base/ote than smb. Since you are killing it, it might be possible to jump straight there.

Don’t sacrifice long term gain (AE role) because of short term success (exceeding quota as a BDR)

Take the AE role if its available! It'll make landing AE roles in the future so much easier
