How to negotiate a higher base salary for a startup SDR role?

I am breaking into tech sales following a career change in television journalism. I am currently a Business Development Manager for a small healthcare company. A prospective tech startup i interviewed with is offering for the SDR role 48K base and 80K OTE. Is that too low?

I always ask "what is budgeted for the role" when asked about compensation.  If they don't have a number, I move on.

It sounds a little low for SF, but Glassdoor or Repvue will give you better benchmarks.

As to how to negotiate, the best method is having another offer.

Too low, I'd also want a breakdown of how OTE is calculated and attained.

FOR SURE low. having another offer is the best. Negotiating for BDR is HARD because they will tell you "you dont have enough experience" for a higher base.

That's low af. The market is hot af right now and anything below 55-60k base is pretty criminal IMO. Especially if you're in SF.

Definitely gonna asking for a number in that ballpark if I am offered! I got some experience and feel they are cheaping out. Thanks for looking out

Definitely keep your options open. I just accepted an offer for an SDR role at 70k base 95k ote. we’re in extreme demand right now so companies are paying more for the talent that they come across. I’d say when they ask you for your salary expections I’d give out 65k-80k base

As someone who has built and managed SDR teams this is super standard. The OTE is actually a bit high considering your relevant experience. I would take it as is and work your way up from inside.

Doesn't make sense to negotiate an entry level role like this and if I was interviewing you that would be a yellow flag for me.

This is great advice! Definitely not taking the first offer, being patient with my options.

startup sdr role = fast growth or fast decay, you have more responsibility, more to prove or more to fail, if you do great, in the first 3 months you can prove your case for a raise and they need you around because you built it and know it, however that being said, i just turned down an 86kbase 110 ote for a lead sdr role at 56/75 -> 3 mo -> 60/80 ->3mo -> AE/SDR Lead 80/120 -> you get the point. More than anything make sure you mesh well with the management style, there culture, and there goals with yourself, otherwise shits pointless and you will churn.

Goodluck!

when you are looking at SDR roles it is really hard to negotiate a higher salary. Especially if you dont have tech experience. most companies are dicks about that.

the best way is to have another offer that is higher (or tell them its higher) then tell them you would really like to work for them if they can match the offer,
