ideas for non commission sales teams

anyone work for a company that doesnt do commission? id like to hear how the performance is going across the bdr/ae team and if you had to implement any strategies to get your team to hit goal? ive worked in many sales orgs and this is my first time working in a role that doesnt offer commission, so im curious to hear other points of view & hopefully convince my boss to get that convo going for us internally.

My org doesn't do commission. We have set targets and most everyone is meeting them. As long as you're hitting your metrics, we have raises built in at certain check points in your tenure. Some vague opportunities for bonuses if you absolutely crush that we're still working on establishing.

Biggest key here: Provide a good salary. This, combined with set metrics/expectations, has proven enough to keep us all motivated.

Very interesting that they would have a different way to compensate, and I'm glad it's working for you!

Apparently, their company also introduced quotas / targets very recently (I think this year only)

How is your team rewarded currently?

How are you currently motivating people to sell more? I understand how this could be attractive at a new company or start up for individuals who maybe want/need a secured paycheck. I just wonder then, does the company just pocket the money if you crush your goals? Do you eventually move to commissions once territories and customers have been built up and shows a heft pipeline?

Is there some other type of performance motivator? Bonuses, popcorn parties, etc? Why would you subject yourself to all the horrors of Selling without some big carrot to motivate you?

I have worked in orgs where the sales team is bonused based on attainment of both revenue and non-revenue OKRs. The rep would have 4 Bonuses per year, and they could attain up to 120% based on accelerators. This was different than commission as it required them to commit to professional development and industry engagement activities on top of selling the services and products of the company.

On a somewhat unrelated topic, howโ€™s the BDR Manager thingy working for you?

Amazing book on this topic -> Drive by Daniel Pink. Essientially outlines a million ways to reward people based on what actually motivates them instead of money. Most people (even if they say other wise) are not primarily driven by money. They want to feel as though they a part of the team, actually help people, are cared for etc. Worth the read!

My org does commission however I don't earn commission, have a larger salary and there's a few like me. We are cranking, ahead on every target for the year so far. Motivation comes in many forms but in terms of recognition, an unexpected bonus is always good or the occasional bottle

If it's not Money, so what else would it be!

It would be just a hidden Customer Service role that does sales but not actually sales.

I would go with Gift Cards as a booster though.๐Ÿ˜…

Non commission sales teams? There is no such thing. Sounds like you have a team of marketers.

My wife worked at a for-profit college. For profit colleges cannot Give out commissions to their sales teams for recruiting students by law.

My big suggestion would be to read Drive by Daniel Pink. It is really big at talking about how you can motivate people without money. Typically, if people are in a role that does not pay well, they are there because it offers them autonomy, mastery, or purpose.

Autonomy: Set your own scedule

Mastery: Learning new skills (think unpaid internships)

Purpose: Charity work for a cause they believe in.

Try to incorporate these things as much as you can to keep a team motivated

Hey there, Iโ€™m in a technical sales role where Iโ€™m supporting business dev managers with their portfolio growth. There is some commission tied to new MRR revenue, however I have a couple goal metrics that incentivize me to focus on the prerequisites to revenue growth. Here they are:
-# of demoโ€™s that I do so that clients are being educated
-# of unique BDMโ€™s with valid opportunities in SFDC so that Iโ€™m not just focusing on working with the top sales person who is fully engaged
-# of new logoโ€™s so that Iโ€™m focusing on diversifying our revenue across more than just one key account
-# of formal training sessions so that internally the BD team is growing their knowledge and pulling stories out of my head based on real experiences I gained as an Account Manager for our SaaS product

Essentially the goals above are the metrics that I have strong influence in hitting. Itโ€™s not an exact same situation, but maybe there is an idea or two in here that may apply to your organization
