The economy is pretty messed up right now, tons of people get laid off. Nothing wrong with being upfront.
Not sure where you are, but noncompetes are usually unenforceable. That doesn't mean your old company won't use some scare tactics though.
Sorry you're in this boat, and good luck!

Is a noncompete valid if you're laid off?

I don’t think it’s ever valid. But I don’t see how it could be in this context

Interesting, @Gasty
I guess the caveat here is that it's as valid as it ever was, which is generally not at all

Going to a competitor is often a great way to get a new role quickly. You are already well-versed in the value proposition, the ICP, and the landscape. Where I am (US) moving to a competitor is often done voluntarily in order to get a better role or an otherwise elusive pay bump.
You don't have to badmouth the previous employer or solution, but you're in a good position to be able to highlight differences to prospects and customers.
And in this environment, a lot of companies are downsizing. If you happened to get caught in a layoff, it's nothing unique.

it’s too small of a world to think of your former competitor as a competitor. Go work for them.

I am actually interviewing with a main competitor of a previous company. Generally, those are the best ones to work for as you know the landscape and personas and can ramp up quarters faster.

People will understand, but make it 100% clear why you are excited to work at their company. You are just looking to land a role, but want to work for this company due to xyz

The new company shouldn't judge you for being laid off. It's not like you weren't performing, the company is just going through cost cutting.

I would be pretty upfront about the layoff and let them know you're still passionate about the industry and that you think your skills would help benefit their org. You know the landscape, the ICP's, key personas, and can most likely hit the ground running with very little training.

Honesty doesn't hurt, the layoffs are wild over the last 9-12 months, so it's a fair story.
But going to competition is great, you know the target market, you know how to beat your old gig, and you'll ramp asap. Speak to the silver linings.

Nothing happened. Went to work for competitor and went back. Wouldn't worry about it and just go for the new role

Its okay to be upfront but speak about being laid off only if required. If its in the news I guess they would know.

If you don't have any non-compete preventing you from taking it, then why not? And yeah, always be honest.
