Making a post about a layoff, but you were not laid off...

Like most of us, my LinkedIn feed is unfortunately filled with layoff posts. However, mine for the last couple of days has been from people at a company that had a layoff but were not impacted...

They usually go like this:

"Today, Company had to let go of wonderful people. I was not impacted by the layoff, but many of my great colleagues, friends were. If you know anybody that is hiring, please reach out to me."

I think these kinds of posts are useless and lowkey narcissistic. If you are really trying to help these wonderful friends, why don't you write them personally or write them a recommendation? And if you really need to make a post, why not tag your friends and write a description of them (with their consent, obv).

Idk why but I'm getting mad at seeing these kinds of posts because they are taking the space from people that actually got laid off. Put the light on them, not you.

What do you think?

I think that is just an opportunity for those to take to show their attention seeking sides. Kind of like the people that make "kindness content"

So you think those posts are just Virtue Signaling? Perhaps.
But those people who are posting often feel genuinely affected and by reaching to their own network to help those laid off is the best they feel they can do.

its 100% virtue signaling. all the posts like that are the same. subtle way of saying "I still have my job everyone!!" while mixing in the crap they are there to "help".
having a job still doesn't make you qualified to be a career coach or job seeking coach. idiots.

It's a bit vacuous if they're not also doing other actionable things like writing recommendations and reaching out to their network personally to see who's hiring.

See if that were the case, I would be all on board. But most of them seem to post just to post. The only ones that I saw that were really trying to help tagged their colleagues with a short description of each of their skills or wrote their colleagues a recommendation, or liked their colleagues' layoff posts.

There are many cases where politically itโ€™s not wise to directly support a former coworker. It sucks. And perhaps you can say โ€œthatโ€™s no reason to not support themโ€. Maybe so. But it is what it is.

Unfortunately sections are cess pools now, some of them, but LinkedIn has more positive resources than any social network Iโ€™m aware of.

LinkedIn is a swamp that unfortunately many people have to traverse to get roles and referrals. I'm trying to be more active on LI not because I want to or think being an "influencer" is cool, but because I have bills to pay and need a job, simple as that. I'll swallow my pride and partake in it if I can find a decent role via networking.

When I see a comment like "if you're hiring" without context, it's not very helpful.
Maybe a bunch of SCs got laid off, but you're hiring in marketing. Maybe your HR department has been reduced, but you are hiring developers. It's just not the best matchmaking.
The layoff posts are good IF they provide context: many great recruiters got let go, so if you're hiring recruiters, hit me up! I have some contacts.
I just don't see people doing that.

Exactly my point! If they really want to help they would make an effort to provide more information, but that's not the case for most of them. They are posting just to post...

I get it, it's useless. But I also agree with Pachacuti that most people really are trying to help and do something to process a bad situation.
Unfortunately, most of it ends up like the FB trend of putting frames around your profile picture of "stand with Paris" or "Boston Strong". After a while, it's meaningless.

Attention seeking content farming is particularly vile. LinkedIn has devolved into a cesspool recently.

I stopped looking at the feed leading up to the 2016 election, when every small business owner apparently decided that their personal political opinion was appropriate and pretty much mandatory to post on a business forum. Yuck.

Great point, when ever Iโ€™ve let go of anyone Iโ€™ve always told them add me as a reference. Good or bad Iโ€™ll agree that you were employed and nothing else as you technically canโ€™t add anything else. They great co-workers Iโ€™d offer to write a letter of recommendation for them.

I think you sound absolutely right. If this is a friend you truly have love for reach out to a firm you think they would be a good fit for and send them a recommendation. Talk to your friend that you love so much and find out what they would like to do, then check your LinkedIn network and see if you have connections you can introduce them to. The internet was made for humans to interact more with more different peoples in more different regions - not to interact less by not leaving your home and bulk sending generic emails while entirely skipping the relationship building process - the process anyone successful will tell you is key in determining your level of success in any field - your ability to build relationships with diverse and talented groups of people.

Intentions may be good, but I think there are more helpful ways to help. Share the impacted employees posts to your network or post a recommendation to their LinkedIn page, for example.

I agree. It's better to give some employees you know a shout-out and that can give them exposure. Those kind of posts always do well with the Algo.

Agree, performative cringe. The thing to do to actually be helpful, is to privately reach out to the individual(s) affected with support and, if you have them, intros & ideas. Do this for folks who got laid off, and they'll never forget you.
