Please Roast My Resume!

Hey Guys,

I really need your help attacking my resume. I've led a more unconventional life these past few years that I think makes me a less attractive candidate than the rest. I'm looking for ways to position my recent experience in the best way possible to land a sales job.

I was out of the country for around 15 months up until December 2022 (not working). Then when I came back, not knowing what I wanted to get back into, I decided to help my friend start his plumbing business (non-plumbing role). I would have continued, as we were just starting to rip, but I found out my wife is now pregnant.

It will be our first kid and now all I can think about is getting as many resources as I can for my family.

I have about 5 years experience in sales selling software. Doing mostly expansion plays and a few net new here and there. I had a strong 2 years before I went out of country but it just seems so long ago now I'm not sure how it will be viewed by hiring teams.

Please be harsh as I need the reality check. If you think you can help improve it I would really appreciate any advice.

Edit: Just updated the resume based on suggestions from comments. Thank you! Please let me know what you think.

I have no idea who or what you are based on this. Are you a GM or an explorer? A floor wax or a dessert topping? Either way, I don’t want any of those on my sales team.

You gotta funnel this into 1 lane. Start with a summary. Please lose the travel section. It’s not work experience.

Haha totally get that. I thought I should prioritize filling in what would be a huge gap in my resume. Only reason why I included that. Any recommendations on how to fill in a two year gap in relevant work history?

I think you rewrote the part that needs to be removed. Remove it. Answer that if asked. You are lacking a candidate summary.
Here. Use this

With transformative contributions across roles, from Account Manager to General Manager, this candidate stands out as an asset in driving robust sales growth and ensuring customer satisfaction.

Is the explorer an actual role or were you just traveling, I would get rid of it. If they ask about the gap, you say you had an opportunity to travel for a year 90% of people will get it.

Ok cool I appreciate that. I was just looking to explain the gap as I thought a two year gap would look worse.

Wait. Chemistry, explorer, wife, leads. I'm not quite sure I know what your exact profession is, and how you traveling to Europe relates to what I would be looking for, as a hiring manager.
I know we all want to be creative and add some spice here and there - but resumes could become risky. You are looking for a serious job where you are taken seriously, so this is not the resume for it.

Too much of a risk, hon. Lose all the glitter and make this a simple professional resume with real value to be added. Traveling is not work related.

Thanks for the feedback! It definitely looks weird, I get it. I could remove all that isn't related to sales, but then my work history ends at Aug 2021. I didn't include it to look flashy. I included it to show what I've been doing. Otherwise it would be a huge black hole of time. Any recommendations for filling in the gap?

Found it a bit messy and difficult to comprehend what you are selling. I agree with other comments on Explorer - why you want to add that. Why you want to tell your hiring manager that you will do CFA that shows you are not looking for a role long term .

Lots of good comments by others, but definitely want to put my weight behind the CFA thing, just seems confusing, like you're exploring career options.

Much better! And I’m sure you’re prepared to talk about what the consolidation of your sales framework means, and how that will benefit your employer. Your achievements are solid. Best of luck.

Appreciate it Sun. Thank you for the feedback. I'm definitely ready to talk about it but I will also test out removing it completely as some said it's not worth putting in. We'll see what the market thinks!

The content of the recent role and the one before your explorer playtime are fantastic. Strip the Napoleon fantasy out and you will improve the resume 80%.

But no need to make it part of your resume

I thought the explorer thing was gonna be a joke like "Increased herpes in Luxembourg by 27.8%", but it wasn't so id take it out. Also, I don't think hiring managers actually read resumes for the most part unless its a small company so it probably doesn't matter.

Haha yeah including this part is definitely the biggest critique of my resume so far. I'm going to test removing it and post a revised version later today. Thanks for the feedback.

Plumbing is a great business to be in. Nothing wrong with it and can be as lucrative as you can make anything else.

FYI - your resume wont land you anything. Stay where you are at.

Lol! That's as harsh as it gets. I agree there is nothing wrong with plumbing!
