Someone posted a poll earlier: Would you pay out of pocket for your own leads? Legit question, but zero context. Here is what I think is a better version.

Many in sales have considered this option, to pay out of their own pocket for leads. Interesting because I am in this thought process on a project right now.

Personally, I would never consider buying some lead list or a bunch of titles and phone numbers. What I am talking about are trained SDRs who have a specific script, ICP target and qualification parameters in place for what constitutes a lead.

They do the outreach based on that and hand over a contact who is qualified and ready to engage and do deal talking.

Would you pay out of pocket for qualified lead gen?

My company can pay for shit that relates to them. My job is not my identity.

Exactly.   Also, I work for a company that wants the right leads.   I've yet to see a lead list that's even decent.

I would never pay out of pocket for anything that my company should be buying. If It's paramount to me being successful, it'll likely help the whole team and should be paid for by my company.

The company is getting the most value from this, not you. You'll get a small portion of the true value of the leads through your commission, but the real winner is the company here so they should be the ones fronting the money.

Depends on the commission/comp structure. But I guess you're theorizing that by spending (x) you're going to gain (x+) in commission. It would have to be a sizable increase for me to consider.

Yes, that has to be factored in. In my particular circumstance, company is shitty at lead gen, pays a small base but enormous commissions on sales conversions for projects with above $100k average deal value. I am thinking about just folding the base back into the lead gen service, and my ROI could be outstanding.

I know how to prospect in my niche and would never pay an outside firm for a lead, especially if it came from my wallet.

i sometimes pay the extra little bit for a tool i want to use. then when i kick butt i tell the company and they pay for me. sometimes you gotta prove it to use it.

Exactly, and if you can prove it out and actually create some success with it prior to trying to sell it internally, much easier to get buy in and make yourself stand out.
