The War Room
Question

This one is for the top 1% b2b reps with documented consistent sales success Have you ever been snubbed by a prospective employer and why is it the best thing to happen to you?

This happened to me recently for the first time since 2016. At first I was confused and disappointed for about 24 hours. it felt like I got hit in the mouth and could taste my own blood.

At the 25th hour, I shifted from disappointment to cultivating and loving the taste of my 'bloody lip'. Now I am more motivated than I ever have been.

As Tom Brady says "I kept all the receipts...Never let THEM define YOU."

When I was early in my career, I had an opportunity to interview for a beverage distributor (spirits), which at the time I thought was like the Cadillac of sales jobs.Β  I had a great interview, history of crushing my goals - and heard that they went with someone who was "a better fit for outside sales". (The CEO's niece :))Β  Turns out, legit one of the best things to ever happen to me.Β  Β I also got fired from my last job, for nothing more than politics, I was the highest performer seller and leader in the company.Β  That led me to my current role where I've had the opportunity to build from a team of 3 and $5 M to a team of 100+ and $100 M.Β  Β Print it, frame it, and put it on your wall - and when you are at the pinnacle of your career - tell the story of the company that sent you the canned "not interested" email.Β

Perfect advice! Had a similar thing happen to me where I got an offer, then negotiated for a starting bonus due to my leaving behind a huge chunk of commission. The Ceo then rescinded the offer stating I was too ambitious and would only stay a year or two before moving on to something better. I laughed - best feedback I’ve ever gotten. Midway through Covid, he sold and all local reps were laid off.Β

As you rightfully should negotiate for leaving commissions on the table from
your previous employer! I hate to see companies go under due to Covid, but hey.. that ceo has the right to rescind an offer. And you have a right to watch πŸ™ƒ

YES! I was snubbed by fantastic agency because the owners daughter needed a job. Problem was I was already employed, had been there for three months and was finally hitting my groove (doing about 30-40k in sales a month). I saw their team a couple years later at a biz journal networking event and I had become a VP at a large media company and they were rebuilding. Turns out their largest client also had a daughter who needed a job and she had to make her mark, so she fired that agency. They were down to like 8 people and one was the owner, one was the daughter. So real six employees. I was polite and such but I took some immoral joy in that exchange.

For every Tom Brady there are a thousand angry people who couldn't cut it and hold a grudge. Β Not taking away from anyone's success story but my advice is to let it go and move on.

@CuriousFoxΒ I got nothing but love for the company that passed on me. I agree with you, though. I am better off, and I wish that company nothing but success.Β
