Threats: My company went through one round of layoff, planning another

So. Background: We went through one round of layoff already. The sales teams are not performing well at all - me included. The economy or the layoffs or the changes company vide; not sure. But now there are passive threats that if people don't 'pull up their socks', they might be the one in the second round of layoffs. This news / word came out just today in a team meeting. It's still up in the air, but apparently there would be another round sometime in 2023.

I don't want to leave the company yet - there's much to learn here. But these threats and a slight toxic behaviour from leadership (internal processes over bringing in the deal. Priorities have changed absolutely over the last few months, we are all barely hitting our numbers).

I also know that switching jobs now is a bad choice.

I am a little confused. Heavily frustrated. Any suggestions / word of advice would be greatly appreciated.

Damn this is really hard. its hard enough to try and perform well under normal circumstances. but if they are threatening layoffs....thats not the best way to get ppl to do well haha.

i think its important to remember that you have to focus on what you can control. just continue to do your best and then what ever happens happens.

if you get effected by layoffs, then you will deal with that. but try not to let that fear add extra stress to your life (not easy i know)

Focus on what you can control.

It’s not directly “You might get laid off”. It’s more of “you know how economy is right now, right. So if you won’t perform well, that might not really work well in your favour. There are talks of more restructuring happening, so we don’t know yet”.

Or

“You asked for time-off during the year-end, but considering your numbers; don’t you think you should put in extra hours?”

As it’s done before, I will definitely prep myself rather than emotionally attaching myself there. All you can is give your best but it’s always good to have a plan B (what if analysis…)

Do we work for the same company? Are you me? Lol yeah I'm pretty much dealing with the exact same shit.

I'm around 50% of quota for the quarter and uhh yeah, I don't think my deal next week is closing. My only advice is to start sprucing up your resume.

That's what I've started doing and I reached out to some old senior AEs I trust to review it. I've done all that I can and I'm sure you have too, so as much as this sucks, sometimes there are just things that are outside of your control.

I put in all the effort I could and if it wasn't enough to move the needle and I get laid off, then so be it. It's not in my control.

Oh god I hope we are not in the same company. I use Bravado as my safe space so far hahahah.

But anyway - same ! I had other AEs review my calls as well. I tried mostly all that seemed realistic. I am not performing- That’s for sure.

Dude. I hear ya. I'm sorry you're going through this.

Keep your head down. Look for other jobs on the down low, and let them give you a severance if they lay you off.

If it happened once, it can definitely happen again. I'd brush off the ol' resume and start seeing what else is out there.

So you can always test the waters for a new role, you can be picky since you have a role currently. Definitely not the ideal environment to work in.

Before the layoffs, how was it working there?

It was amazing, to be honest. It’s a 360 degree drift now. Processes have changed altogether (none of these process make sense anymore). Targets have increased, leads have decreased. There’s no autonomy as an AE to make any decision around your own deals.

It’s toxic because leadership changed as well. The good ones are leaving / left.

Where did those leaders go? Those could be places you can take a look at.

I’d know that come 2023. :p They are all serving notice right now. And I am already in their good books, so I am also eyeing their LinkedIn updates. 😂

So tough! Hang in there, do your best, and know that it's clear it's not your individual performance that is causing the issues. We're all feeling it in one way or another.

The unfortunate part of a downturn is that everything is scrutinized more heavily and thoroughly, because the company itself is not in a position to lose too many deals. It's a sad truth. This is a good time to work on and refine your own very best practices so that they're reflexive, and when times are good, you'll have a solid foundation on which to build.

Yeah, that happens when companies aren’t performing. I prefer the carrot to the stock, but if there are shareholders or investors, it might be up to the board to make the decision.

You don’t want to work for that leadership. I’m at 99% of my annual goal, way over ote, and know im likely screed when we do layoffs after new years bc my pipeline is struggling

Lay-off's are really hard for everyone involved leadership, employees, and new candidates in the future. I once received advice that timing is everything, you can move too early, you can move too late but we never know until we move. Control what you can control, and take some of your personal time to understand if you did have to make a move, what would it be to. That way when the time comes your running towards something not away from it.

I was hired at a really good start up about 4 months ago for a SDR role that I was told I wouldn’t be in for very long. They’re gonna go public in the next year, but Zoom Info reached out to me about an Account exec position. Now I’m wondering if I should take the guaranteed route to AE or let my shares vest and get to AE at the place that took me. Usually I wouldn’t consider jumping so quickly, but AE is AE.
