To Move Off Grid Or Stay In The City ๐Ÿ‘€

Anyone got experience/advice leaving a big city to move off-grid? Thinking about moving somewhere rural when my lease in Boston expires mid Q2. The only problem is I've lived in a city the majority of my life. I don't have much experience with farming, but I could learn to raise animals, and having some land would be great. Will see what happens, but the girlfriend is currently on board and I wouldn't mind getting away from the hustle and bustle of a city.

So you can have the best of both worlds. I currently live in a rural area and love it. I also like that going to "town" only takes 30 minutes. There aren't any frills or conveniences though, so don't even think about any kind of food delivery.ย

While that might be painful in the short term I think my body would benefit greatly from no more late-night drunk Mcdonald orders๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ.ย

Bring extra ranch too please. I'm thinking we make a ranch dunk-tank for those that don't pass the initial "quality" assessment.ย

I like being in the city for the convenience, but every time I vacation off the grid, it makes me want to leave the city permanently. Being close to nature and animals, the fresh air, peace and quiet, the lack of crowds and annoying human beingsโ€ฆI love it. I can see it for myself in the future for sure.ย

I vote you try it out. You donโ€™t necessarily have to jump into farming right away, but you could certainly look for a place in a rural area like Fox, or even in a small town. If you like it, then you can look into purchasing property and homesteading. Worst case scenario, you prefer the city and move back.ย

Agreed. Think I'm gonna dip my feet in the water with an Airbnb for a month to see if me and the ole ball and chain like it and if we do go all in.

Definitely give it a try first before going full Amish.ย

I'd suggest this book if you're interested in learning more about going "all in" on "off the grid":ย  https://www.amazon.com/Weekend-Homesteader-Twelve-Month-Guide-Self-Sufficiency/dp/1616088826

Yeah, I get that a lot, but then I realize how much I love convenience and the quality of the experiences that I get in the city every day. Do I ever have to worry about electricity or heat or cooling? Not really. Blizzard coming? Well, Iโ€™ll just pick up an extra 6 pack and make sure to have some leftovers if I donโ€™t want to cook. The restaurants can be really good in the burbs, but sometimes hard to find (Rhineback, NY is a dream for a long weekend). But hey, I love not having to drive or own a car.

One of my friends sold most of his possessions and has lived out of a Mercedesโ€™ sprinter since mid pandemic. Said it took a few months to adapt to the change but overall was a good decision.ย

Personally my goal is to live in a cabin in the mountains so Iโ€™m all for it.ย

Off grid and country living are totally different things. Do you plan to live on a property with self-powered electricity (solar) or do you just want to be out in the sticks where it takes 30-minutes to get to the grocery store?

Great point. Think I'm going to start slow out in the sticks where I can get to a grocery store in a half-hour if need be and then if I like the lifestyle maybe go full self-powered.

I grew up in a small town, lived in the city for 5 years and then moved into a small cabin in the mountains and would never go back to the city.ย

Sure you give up some of the modern conveniences like Uber and food delivery but I love being able to ski/mtb bike/go out on my boat whenever I want. I also dont really like people so being secluded is great.

Ill forever be grateful for remote work because it lets me live the life I want while still havin a career.ย

In short, do it.ย ย

Iโ€™m in the burbs surrounded by nature and loving it. Not hardcore farming, by any stretch, just tomatoes and grapes, but the quiet canโ€™t be beaten. I live close enough to a few major cities to take advantage of things they offer, but far enough away that we do not have the noise and crowding. Good luck!

Move away to a smaller, quieter suburb, but still be close enough to a big city in case you need something (bougie groceries, nightlife, actual reliable medical care, etc.)

I'll move a little out of the city later in the career, right now I love night life still.ย

Plus I do have a cottage so we're still good on the country/relax vibes.ย

Highly recommend picking a smaller city. You get a lot of the perks of a big city but cost of living is cheaper and there's typically rural areas closer to you.ย

I live in a small city that's about 5 hours from 4 different major cities. I can always head to a bigger city if I want for a long weekend, but I get the benefits of small city life too.

Not a bad idea at all. I think small cities have the most charm. Thank you for the perspective!

Off-grid is VERY different than rural.ย ย
If you have only lived in the city, you won't last long being truly off-grid - and I don't know if you can really accomplish this anywhere on the East coast of the US.

Rural is MUCH different.ย  You can have most of the above benefits you outline (except the farm animals) and still benefit from technology.

Man, I dream of my wife saying alright fine letโ€™s move south and get away from the City. Iโ€™d do it in a heartbeat, live in the sticks of the Carolinas or Georgia.

Make sure it's got main conveniences, but it's cheap enough that you can buy a manageable plot of land.ย

Personally, I'm a city guy. I love the hustle and bustle of a city and having activities all the time.ย

I bought a 2nd place in the sticks (2.5 hours away from my City place). Go big Chep. Its funny cause the country house is like 66% less than the city one, funny how that shit works but i like it 100% more than the rustle and bustle. Do some long term rentals like 2-4 weeks at places nearby and see if you dig it before committing to packing it all up and heading into the sunset, thats what i did.ย
