Too much PTO?

Hey Savages,

I've been at my company for about 100 days, I've performed strongly but haven't become the star player yet.

Rather, I've become that strong, reliable running back that you know you can count on to get you 60-80 yards every game, but won't give you those 150+ yard stellar games, at least not yet.

I tied at #4 with 3 other people last month in a team of around 29.

I mention this because I was thinking of taking some time off 10-12 PTO days total, coupled with 2 company wide holidays which will end up being around 3 weeks off total...

I just want to get everyone's thoughts on this as I know I haven't been at the company for too long and if this might make me look bad or something like that.

For those that manage teams, what would you think if someone on your team in this situation asks you this? Should I wait longer or should it be fine?

I've never taken extended PTOs before at this or other company, most I've done is 5 days. My manager is a great guy but also thinking how others above him may perceive it.

Lastly, these past few months I've only taken 4 days off because of COVID and planning to take 2 days off this month as I have a pro boxing fight on the books, just waiting on the exact date to be confirmed.

Would love to get everyone's thoughts on this, thank you savages!

Is this unreasonable or too much PTO too soon?

While I don't think it an unreasonable request, and you're doing quite well, I do feel that a lot would look down on it this early in your tenure.

In Canada, or at least Ontario, most companies have a 90 day probation period. It could look to some like you've just been waiting to be secure so you could fuck off for a few weeks.

Its great you are already a top performer, 4th out of 29 its great!!

Not a hiring manager but here are my 2 cents:

Are you at a place with unlimited PTO or are you given a set amount. I would assume if you are given a set amount and aren't over the days PTO given you are good. Also how far out is the PTO needed, I would say you need more than just a couple weeks notice on this.

However, Its a must to ask during a 1:1 with the manager. I would not just throw the PTO on the calendar invite including the manager, with this much time off, I would recommend talking about it during the 1:1 to tell the manager why you are taking the time off.

Some people WILL look down on it, but people will always look down on people using PTO unless they are prez club

Congratulations on being a solid performer! That definitely helps your case.

That said, I recommend that you discuss this exact thing with your manager in a 1:1. Give them plenty of time to consider and make sure it's no big deal before you commit to taking the time. If you have a good relationship, you should be able to discuss this and get an honest answer.

Idk tbh even if I was at #1 I wouldn’t. Its just too bad for my compensation or pip plan. At our company if you dont hit for one month you get put on a pip so thats not fun. I would hit quota early and then take a week off if anything

that's a pretty ruthless pip plan. Sounds like people don't take many extended vacations over there.

So let's say your attainment is 90% one month, does that mean you get pip'd?

Sad, you must not be working hard enough. When you do, then you know it is time to take PTO, to perform at the level I am used to.

Perception is reality in most cases, so as long as your manager is solidly backing your request and is willing to defend you, take the time off. I'll admit, it is a lot of time off for the short time you've been with the company, so be prepared for some flak.

You own your book and you own your number. If you can still hit and have coverage then you should take the time off. If you can't hit your number then you should pass on some of the vacation and work.

You’re an AE. So if you’re still working important deals during that time, then it’s not a huge issue. But if you were planning on disconnecting 100%- no way Jose.

Hmmm. Corporate mindset sometimes would be about consistency. 90 days is not an ideal timeframe to decide whether or not you are consistent. So not sure if you should take this PTO. YOu can maybe perform for a while more and then take it.

I don't see it being wrong by any means. But I'm with the general consensus, it may just look bad on your part.

I've always lived by the rule that I don't take PTO in my first 6 months unless it was pre planned before I accepted the job.

With that said, 3 weeks off is a very long time regardless of tenure. If I was a manager, I'm not sure how I would feel about this. As an employee, I don't think I would do it. You're basically starting over from scratch when you get back because someone else had to work your pipeline while you were gone.

As a manager would you rather chance on going back out and hiring? Think about 4th spot player within 90's is automatic? #supportyourplayers

You should be good if you're performing okay. Typically, you want to present to your LT that you had these already booked and that you've already bought the tickets and accommodations to attend. Basically present to them that you're in too deep to back out now.

3 weeks total is a long time to not be moving deals along. Feedback from my management was 2 weeks is a stretch but acceptable.

Just talk to your manager, if they're human they'll be honest on how a 3 week vacation will look.

Man that’s a hard one. I feel (probably to my mental health’s detriment) that even with automation tools in place if I am out for more than a week my pipeline dies.

That's tough. You'll need to do a lot of prep work to make it happen and not let it affect your results. You'll need your manager on board to help cover too.
I would set some expectations like "this is a once in a lifetime thing", etc. so they don't think you're going to do this every year.

Yeah id probably steer clear on this one at a minimum its going to look bad and the higher ups will remember that that newer guy took forever off (and probably wont hit ur quota if u do that) when promos come around.

Even if you were tenured, top performer, and it was for wedding/honeymoon you would still get some side-eyes from colleagues and above.

If you have to question if the company will continue to support you, if you take PTO which is a benefit, then you are at the wrong company.

Now if you think this personally wrong, too soon, hurt your rankings where you can't bounce back, plan on a long stretch with no PTO following this, then you need to weigh that.

My young days NO way would I do this, now f yeah. Life first, companies don't give a shit about you. They are about your ranking.
