Transitioning out of Medical Device Sales

Hey guys I've been trying to get out of Med Device Sales the last year or so with no such luck yet. I had a call earlier with leadership and I'm expecting to be laid off in the next 90 days. I'd be happy with any opportunity where I'm not at the hospital at all hours and would really love a work life balance with a base salary and not having to grind on 100% commission. I've always been a top performer and have a strong history of success but I'm completely burned out and need a change. I'd appreciate any advice or suggestions. Thanks!

I just transitioned out 4 months ago. What are you selling now? Capital or disposables or what?

First off, Congrats! I've spent most my time in Ortho but last year made the move to a startup selling Laparoscopic disposables. Big mistake on my end but hey live and learn.ย

Dude! I cannot believe you left Ortho! I've got a few knee and hip replacement friends that make BANK.

I can understand why you left ortho.. being on call for cases is a tough life. I had a friend who just turned down a lap probes startup job so I wonder if it is a similar company. Are you looking to get into tech or just looking at all options?

From the ortho reps I know, the money is mostly not what it used to be. There is an incredible amount of price pressure from IDNs pushing suppliers down in a race to who can be the cheapest based on who wants to win these large National contracts.

I just canโ€™t imagine your income being so dependent on a couple key doctors. What happens when they retire or move?

Same shit for prescriptions. I did it for 10 years. Loved it until I got tired of being a glorified caterer. I hear ya.

I lived this very much 2 years ago when a large system went to a single source deal thus wiping out my largest doc and a few others too. He was almost 40% of my business and that killed it essentially overnight. We tried to work around it but eventually it was shut down by the CFO.

Thatโ€™s what eventually had me looking outward. Ortho was really great but definitely not the same money as we had to give huge discounts to stay competitive.

I wasnโ€™t in joints, I did a lot of lower extremities but outside of frames the cases didnโ€™t bill out like a knee or hip. Plus those lucky guys do didnโ€™t have to take call haha.

I've always wondered if I'd be able to make it through surgery. ๐Ÿค”

Honestly Iโ€™m open to anything. Id prefer tech but Iโ€™d explore anything for the right fit. Hell I ran into the old Biomet rep from my area the other day and heโ€™s doing HVAC sales and loves it and the stability of it all. That really got me thinking hard.

I like the track your friend went. Iโ€™m in manufacturing automation now selling hardware. Iโ€™ve found the sales process to be a lot simpler with less hoops. Iโ€™m having to build the business from scratch but itโ€™s good money and the people treat me a hell of a lot better than surgeons or hospital admin ever did.
