The value of Unlimited PTO is inversely proportional to the size of your quota.

Damn, you put that so well.
It's a marketing ploy to attract talent that doesn't think critically.

Bingo. I also guess that it means they don't owe you any vacation if you leave or get fired?

I have 3 weeks vacation plus sick time, and every year I lose days since our don't roll over. Use your time.

I used to be able to cash those out, rather than lose them outright. Then we moved salaried employees to "unlimited" PTO and that bennie went away. So, yes, take your time.

Exactly why they did it… take an unfunded liability off the books, and eliminate the hit to P&L.

Company can tout the great benefit of unlimited PTO knowing statistically that people take less than they would with a defined plan.

I have it. I haven't really taken advantage of it yet outside of long weekends last year to cover travel for my son's tournament and game weekends, but I feel that I could take more for at least a full week. Building up to a major amount of time off next summer, however.

I have it too, we can take only one long 2 weeks (max), however, unlimited if not really for long leaves multiple times a year.

Director of Sales & Marketing
Only experienced it at my last company and it’s quite literally a pipe dream, even as a manager, but especially as an IC. No quota relief, can be denied for any reason since it’s not owed to you and not payable upon exiting the business (PTO usually is)

It’s a complete rip off. They tout it as a perk but in reality they don’t have to pay you out any unused vacay if you leave and they put the pressure on you to not take vacations. It completely screws people over.

Exactly.

On the other hand, when I left my job where we accrued PTO I got an additional $10K paid out for un-used PTO I'd banked over the years.

I have it, but haven’t taken that much outside of the holidays end of year. I have an under 2, so not much time anyway. I plan on taking time next year.

After starting in an hourly role that accrued time two years ago, I’ve had unlimited PTO since last summer.

We’re communicative of our plans, aren’t leaving the team high and dry, and ultimately understand our goal/quota won’t be adjusted. Haven’t seen anyone abuse it yet!

Also, really helpful when those random emergencies in life come up. You’re not having to juggle whatever that may be ALONG with worrying about your bottom line.

Had it in the past, used about 20 days. 2nd most on my team was like 10

it always feels like a scam to me. If a recruiter puts it in front of me I always ask what the average days of were the year before for people in that role.
They don't like it and never answer :D

Currently have unlimited PTO at my org. Supposedly they encourage a minimum of 2 weeks PTO taken but not sure how that applies within the sales org.

Unlimited. I’ll probably end up taking around 30-40 days off this year over the course of several different trips. I still work a bit through the time off.

Worked for a start up that offered it. People were regularly reprimanded for taking any sort of PTO longer than a few days. Rip off

Oh, it's greeeattttt if you work in accounting or marketing. But it's absolute bullshit if you are in sales. My manager knows I look forward to taking a week off in July and he's not letting me go this year. Despite me barely taking any days off...and we have Unlimited PTO. 😤

Best rule of thumb.

Let somebody know you're taking two weeks.Their reaction tells you every single thing you ever need to know.
