Vacation week

For real - how do you turn off. I don't know how. I am in management so to "send a message to the team" I am on a mandatory week vacation (have to use my time off before my anniversary next month).

I have deals to close! another $120k is just at my door. At 10% commish.

Once again I am coming to you asking for your savage advice. how do you turn off?

"Lose" your laptop charger
Uninstall email, slack, and CRM from phone

Remind yourself -- the place won't burn down in a week

Exactly. We aren't brain surgeons or military generals, nobody is going to die or face life altering consequences because we aren't at work.

I specifically set up a second phone for all my work apps and accounts. I just leave the phone and comp at home. I trust my reporting chain to handle any fires that might come up until I get back

A second phone for "work apps and accounts." I guess that's a better way to refer to your trap phone...

In order to disconnect, you really have to make a plan on how you will disconnect, communicate this plan, and then stick to it. Strict protocol for when to "Sound the Alarm" and let everything else just burn, you'll be fine.

Solid thinking. I guess I am reconsidering why I feel the need to stay connected. IDK if I trust my team…which is really bad.

If you can't truly disconnect for that entire timeframe possibly try this.  First Day and Last Day of vacation allow yourself to check emails in the morning, once at lunch time and then once in the evening.  Only respond to "fires" but allow yourself the time to get away.  The second day of vacation and second to last day only check emails in the morning.  Other days of vacation just check out.

I also struggle with fully checking out but have found if I give myself some grace and check to calm my mind I can enjoy vacation more.

I like this grace period approach.

If you try real hard and have enough drugs and alcohol - the whole week can flash by without even having to sweat it.

Better living through chemistry cuz.

It bums me out that you feel like you have to work that much on a break. This country barely gives us any breaks as it is, and when we do get breaks we feel guilty for unplugging. Just unplug dude, you need to recharge your batteries

Thanks bud. It’s so hard for me. I graduated during the ‘09 recession and never have felt like things will be ok. It’s time to move on (13 years later).

Sales is a lifestyle but you got to teach yourself to switch off.  @funcouponsanology of us not holding life or death roles is so true and while money is nice, honestly id rather just have enough and be healthy and that involves switching off.

If you need to get real practical about it, just book your days full of stuff.  Like get out of the house and do stuff kind of stuff.  Like Tuesday im going to go hit up that brewery ive been looking at.  Or Wednesday im gonna go rent a kayak and just spend a day on the lake etc.  Make it practical.

Think long term/big picture. Your mental health isn’t going to help you close deals down the road if you don’t unplug now.

there is literally no one who can block and tackle your accounts for a week?  And you are 100% they will close within the next week?  If that is the case, keep your phone on with an outbound msg.  And send an email to those accounts which are on the verge of closing that you are OOO for a week and to CALL if there is anything pressing.

No. No there isn’t. I struggle because time off means double time when I get back. Which I’m realizing is a big problem.

For 10k I will talk to you. But for no other reason than the deal. Questions about implementation, nope. Questions about technical functionality, nope. Book a meeting next week. Preferably We’d or Thursday once I’m back on the grind and acclimating.
