Why the WFO Argument Falls Flat

People love to quote culture, or claim young people need guidance, (never mind no one knows how to do that anyways) or they like to start rambling on about camaraderie and team building and etc.

But the reality is always that we don't work for free. Here for monies, not friends or that other nonsense.

If you got to the office to get a sense of purpose with people or you try to justify it with that logic..... Get some friends. Join meetup.com and attend any number of events and activities, it's a good start if you don't know where to begin.

Yup. I don't buy into the "collaboration wah wah wah" bs either. I can easily collab via Teams. Proven to work for 3 years. The way we work has changed. I don't understand how folks refuse to have learned nothing from the pandemic.

I live right by my office so I don't mind, however I would love the flexibility to do hybrid. 3 days a week in office is reasonable to me.

So I take it you are against WFO? If that is the case, from a Sales POV, I disagree.

When my client WFH itโ€™s very hard to meet
Up In person. They simply donโ€™t want to. And getting more than 1 in the same room is even harder.

When they WFO, itโ€™s much easier to see them in person, take them out to lunch, etc. selling is easier.

As an AE who used to travel a fair amount to meet with customers, and who hasn't met a customer in person since 2019....I feel this. I'm willing to meet them in person, but get deferred because their teams are scattered and in different geos. I miss meeting my customers, but if they're all WFH or from different offices, c'est la vie. It's not me, it's them - and I'm not sensing that my customers are going to be changing any time soon.

^ this. Same here- I was on the road 2-4 times per month pre-covid, usually traveling to a few different cities for a couple days of meetings booked together. It was an advantage to winning deals getting face time beyond just the 'pitches' and since then Ive noticed that every single one of my calls, nobodys in their office and further the majority of buying teams are no longer even located in the same state. Even if I wanted to travel from time to time which I do, its impossible to meet more then 1 person. I rationalize this by my competitors not being able to do it either so I dont hate it but would be nice to swing into a prospects office!

Yes. This is another argument against Working from home. But again, these are arguments that are all about me and not the collective as a whole.

If it's difficult to meet all at once, why not meet all individually?

If it's difficult to build rapport over a video call...... ever done that with someone you just met, or a friend, or whomever? It's the same concept.

Sounds like WFH isn't as easy as people working in an office when it comes to your job. Not exactly a solid argument for being against it.

Video is not the same as meeting in person. Never has been, never will.

And yes, my reasons are entirely selfish.

I agree with all of this. There are certainly benefits to being in the office as well, but for me, the pros don't outweigh the cons

Maybe I'm just at the stage in my life where my work friends may or may not be my actual friends, but I agree. I don't need to be physically in the office to get that sense of purpose, and I'm happy to be Teams chatting or having long calls with my colleagues once we have a spare moment. I'm personally supposed to be focused on customers, and our company has widely disbursed people with whom I collaborate, so we'd still be on Teams to connect anyway.

โ€œGet some friendsโ€ dude, this is more cringe than Steve from LinkSquares backing off his own โ€œin-person requiredโ€ policies.

You didnโ€™t present an argument to counter the efficiency or mental health benefits of occasional, optional office work. Make one that holds water and we can have a balloon fight.

Meetup.com is not a venue for productive work with your team in-person. Execution hinges on proper planning, but Iโ€™m not going into the office to use it as a clubhouse.

The idea behind that is you can work with people and meet up with them outside of work in various ways. Going to an office isn't necessary for that sort of thing.

Lets be real here. The idea of team in a work environment seems to be used very loosely by companies.

Just another battle in the war against rights and freedoms for the collective.

WFO is all about power. Where you must live, what you must buy to work, when you must be there and when you can leave.

Well I wouldn't dive as deep because WFH is relatively new concept that became popularized with the pandemic.
I think everything is about control then. Books, TV shows, foods, how your social security numbers tie into banks and governments. Personally too small person to do anything else about it but to play along

It kind of is. But capitalism is wholly dependent on being able to sell and affect positive business outcomes.
WFH is seen as a massive antithesis to these business outcomes. So it's only natural for people to come up with any and all excuses to fight against it.

And yet, COVID and everyone working at home was the most profitable time for the majority of these businesses that are fighting against it. So..... how can it be about sales?

Pretty jaded way of looking at a job. You can have it both ways. It's possible to have flexibility and still make lasting relationships at work.
