Would you rather?

Background - recently hired as a BDM under the assumption I would be managing accounts and generating rev (you know what they say about assumptions). Turns out, it's a brand new role where I am doing all discovery/pitch calls with leads and turning over the qualified ones to be managed by someone else.

My additional duties are cleaning up the process and putting together SOP's for this role to make new partnerships smoother.

TLDR

My question here is, would you rather help format a new role and try to climb the ranks this way OR express your interest in moving to the role of managing accounts (my background)?

Do what makes you happy. For some it will be shifting and creating the role, for others climbing as fast as they can, trust your gut in this. Or get the one that pays more, either or.

dude thats dope if the pay is good. open accounts, throw them over the fence, get paid.

a great line from the show BILLIONS is when the DA's dad tells him to run for Governor. He says, 'I have to do this job first.'

It was a good line and also true. Do the job you were hired to do well, first. Then move up.

True that. That’s where I was going with it, the job is pretty easy and the pay is well. The flexibility to create the role as I go Is nice too. It’s just mind numbing to my skill set.

It essentially sounds like you were hired being told one thing and now are acting as an SDR, right?
Without knowing your industry and company size I'm not sure what I can recommend.
If I were in your position I would be pretty angry about being lied to.

Pretty much. The company is growing quickly and has a well known reputation in the industry. On a positive note - it’s limited to no travel, good benefits, shares, and better pay than my previous role. The company is great, but my only downfall is the duties itself of the role.

Was in the same scenario, after a while the grind becomes rather hard but that’s because people purely relay on you and don’t get the pressure but after a while you realise you own the space and you can work on the whole bucket. And then, you’re work gets noticed and the promos come flying in etc etc
