Would you rather job options

option 1.   work in the payments processing industry. merchant services as they also call it.

option 2. work with a series A startup whose VP Is reviewed well across both internal sales people and social media?

startup has product fit and been around for a few years. includes AM. outbound. has SDR 1 SDR for each sales person) and SDR's for prospecting in to existing accounts. tech stack is ok.

payments industry is a large corporation, but there's a new one almost every day in this industry. total OTE can be lucrative but you always have to prospect as people leave and switch for better pricing consistently. and is kind of a scummy business.

Leaning towards option 2, but Series-A is a crapshoot.

@CRAG112 My Previous company was 100% payments (I won't say which company/ niche) and I did quite well. They have a semi-sticky solution which helps in dealing with customer churn. That said, the book "Eat their Lunch" which is all about taking customers from your competitors was quickly becoming the bible there.
You can make an obscene amount of money in Payments if you land the right accounts. But everyone is competing hard for those accounts, and margins are getting thinner and thinner - a lot like selling long distance was in late '90s/2000's. So if you have some solid relationships which you can take advantage of to hit the ground running - go for it!

Regarding the start up - if the VP is very social media active, then IMO he's one post away from getting fired. All it takes is one not-so-well-thought-of post to get you on the 💩 list. But if you believe in their product and think the company can weather losing the VP, when it eventually happens, than it may be a better option.

Good luck!

I used to work in the industry as well. Your analysis is spot-on

What is the comp, quota, and attainment?

Also, how is the start up just a series A if it has been around and works? Should ask the right questions to them.

Option 2 all day. Payment industry is a boat race to the bottom.

Def option 2: why? Imagine spending basically every day in conversation with prospects and existing customers racing to zero on price and constantly fearing the risk of some new player or a competitor undercutting you.

You’ll never really get to sell based on the value of your product because it’s a commodity and likely you’re REAL OTE will reflect that.

Despite series-A the startup is undoubtedly your better option

leaning towards 2, but qualify the company, product fit and leadership hard. I've been burnt by the Series A smoke in mirrors before.. founders can sell a dream better then anyone else

lol lots of good options in the comments I see.

So one AE has been at the company for a few years. About 2.5.

The VP is not social media heavy, just using it for a job posting or general info here and there. Lots of sales peeps seem to think she is good to go, including those working there.

Company isn’t one of those fancy AI startups or etc, so they aren’t killing it with funding but are increasing head count strategically v trying to hire like crazy and hope for the best.

Using revops and strategy to increase market share and improve their GTM strategy.

Ps. Payments is definitely scummy. Literally zero barrier to entry in the business. Only 60-100 other companies prospecting your accounts. And everybody is trying to gain margins off of atrocious fees.

10 bucks for a customer monthly statement fee. Like GTFOH. It’s no wonder companies like Stripe got popular. But to be fair, even they screw their customers over sooner than later. Been seeing lots of hate for Stripe in the startup world.
