Would you take a job that doesn't offer commission if the salary is juicy enough?

Pretty self-explanatory question. I'm currently working a job where this is the arrangement, and I'm really digging it. They hired me a few months back with an offer that beat out the OTE with my previous employer.

I look at the variable amount of OTE as an added bonus just for being there. For instance, "you'll pay me X amount of dollars on salary... and I get Y amount on top for actually doing the job that I've been hired for." The variable just sweetens the pot in my eyes. If you can finagle the extra cash up front rather than monthly or quarterly why not do it? Just make sure you don't fall behind on your goals. The variable OTE is something to keep you motivated, but if you can maintain your motivation while getting paid upfront, by all means, take advantage. This is sales baby, so no matter the situation you'll get out what you put in!

Not really. $200k is the new $100k. $400k is the new $250k.

I'm not good at math or analogies.

I guess if you're senior sales it makes sense. I'm only on year 6 of my career, so I'm just stoked to be making 6 figures.

Six figures at six years is great. Congrats! Keep pushing and moving up. I'm at about 20 years, so there a great opportunities to make crazy money.

If it gives me something predictable and I am set, I’ll take anything over 300k and go with it.

Yeah, that's NYC. My dollar here in Michigan goes about 2-3x further and I don't have to deal with living in NYC or the surrounding areas lol

Yes. Commissions are taxed at a higher rate than regular base pay so if you can get a higher salary then your net take home pay will be higher than if your OTE was the same with commission.

Yes as others said we all have our price and I think it would be nice not going through the feast/famine that can occur with commission earnings.

I'd be even more interested if some of that comp included stock or retirement contributions to help with tax planning.

Would have to be a high 6-fig number tho...

Considering that commissions are taxed so heavily, I'd be more than happy with a big base
