3 calls with sales leaders at a big company I want to work for, how to make the most of them?

As you all know my story, laid off a few weeks ago.

I have a list of companies I have been wanting to work for and connected with a lot of sales leaders at one company in particular. 3 are open to speaking with me next week. Again, I reached out to them to ask to speak and they are open to it.

I want to work for this given company. How can I make the most of these initial calls?

Were you explicit in the reason you wanted to work for them? If so, go into it like a discovery call. Understand the challenges they are facing in the industry, as well as the challenges of their team as they work to catch up in 2023. Learn about their culture, goals, current attainment, etc.

Determine what they are focused on as a business and then find a way to frame your value. Don't rush to sell yourself, just like you shouldn't start pitching before you know the true fit.

Piggybacking here because this is gold. Well done @poweredbycaffeine

I'd add...

Can you pull any press releases (investor/earnings) and learn about their 1-5-10 year vision?

I think this would show strong characteristics in that you're not short sighted just looking for a job, rather, you want to be a part of help attaining these goals.

Excellent points. Familiarize yourself as much as possible with the companies, and looking at any vision plans, mission statements and initiatives they have will be very important. Listening to the short term and long term strategy is going to help you understand if the company is really somewhere you'd like to work AND help you position your value to them at the appropriate time.

Congratulations on landing these calls! That's some stellar work.

This is brilliant! I will make this a part of my strategy. High-level leaders love this sort of stuff. I will do the research on this here.

@poweredbycaffeinehas said it best. Goes without saying but be clear in your research of the company, its clear you likely are as you seem keen on working there. Express why you are keen on working there and learn from them.

Ultimately, probably the main thing is, go in expecting rejection and anything else is a bonus.

That makes sense.

Good on you for making the most of your situation.

I would recommend the following:

(1) prepare questions in advance (good for you for starting now!)
(2) know the outcome you want
(3) do your research on the company and the person(s)
(4) prepare your own "elevator speech" - 30-60 seconds max, including the "why are you looking for a job?" response

As far as exact questions:
(1) Ask how they got into the company they are currently at
(2) ask how successful applicants get through the interview process
(3) ask what is sought after, which is NOT on the job description
(4) ask about longevity

Finally, put yourself in their shoes and think about what would impress you the most? They are probably feeling impressed by your hustle here, so think about how to keep that momentum going.

IMO, you need to give them faith that you will onboard quickly and be low risk.

ask yourself why you'll hit the ground running and try to be able to answer the following before speaking with them:

do you know the persona you'll sell to well?
What they care about?
Typical challenges?
how they're measured?
What they actually want to do?
How your (company you're interviewing) helps?

Closing question(s) before we hop off, are there any concerns you have about me that I can answer now before we go over next steps?

Or

Ask what qualities or traits they look for in a quality rep…let them talk. Then when they finish. You say “ great hopefully I displayed a few of those traits on our call today and I look forward to hearing from you”

Hey, keep that apparently awesome energy you have to have landed 3 chats in a few weeks! Even if they don't work out, you find out that the companies are trash or whatnot - keep it up, congrats! Burnout happens when confidence wanes. Don't lose it! Meanwhile, check out Press Releases and 10K's. If you can find a quote from the guy/gal you are chatting with and be able to say "so I saw you said, blah blah" you will hit that ego button - powerful button. Maybe reach out to some of the lower level AE's or BDR types on LinkedIn and say "hey dude, gotta question", have a quick chat telling them you are meeting with King Bozo and ask what they suggest for an approach. Do some Google searching to find out if the person digs golfing, some team, etc. and do a bit of research to make the chat more of a casual thing. Good luck!

I'm probably too late (and I hope you got it) just be yourself. Jokey, personable...as though it were you interviewing.

Do your research, make sure curiosity shines during the call. Use it as an opportunity to show you're ability to active listen, respond with curiosity and get to a deeper why, follow up and let your process shine

Look at their companies what are likely to be problems they probably have with the sales org now and how are you going to come in to help? not take a ton of time to onboard? bring rev in fast? And ask about things that aren't obvious. IE.(where are their reps struggling the hardest right now?)

Try to focus at the call on the achievements as much as possible you had at the old companies you've been working for.
Concentrate also on the value you will add once being accepted and the difference you're gonna make & what you could do the others couldn't do that easily once being hired.
Much of luck 👍
