Am I a spoiled bitch?

You're probably thinking this is a post about objection handling.

Actually. I'm a little conflicted and was curious if anyone has had a similar experience.

I joined a start up 3 years ago on the ground level (first employee). 2.5 years into after growing to $7MM ARR, getting a $21 MM series A, and making a good amount of money, the company started crumbling. mostly due to the CEO, but that's a story for another post.

I had, on paper, and excellent escape route, but in a totally different space. I got offered a job to work for a VP of sales I rolled up to in my AE stint before the start up. Offer included higher base, OTE, and equity.

Took the job.

The company is buttoned up, reputable, and will likely go public in the next 18 months. The software is actually good. Client retention rate is amazing. All the employees are ultra high performers and really cool.

But I just can't get into it. I'm hitting quota and all but I just simply could care less about solving the problem this technology solves.

Anyone been in a similar situation?

Debating on if I'm being a spoiled bitch or just need to find something I'm more interested in.

hahah! i mean ya a little!

there is a difference between not caring about the problem you are solving, and then not being able to do your job.

I have ADHD and one thing ive found is that if im not super engaged in what im doing.....ill just stop caring and stop producing. but if your still producing,....then you good homie!

Same here. I haven't had a month where I didn't make a progressively higher amount of money in quite a while. But my ADHD has me totally over my job some days. I love it when I'm actively engaged with a prospect. I can spend a half hour on a cold call and love the hell out of it.

When things get mundane and repetitive, I check out.

I'm the same, 3 companies in the last 4 years. I'm killing it at my current company. I'm not exactly lacking in connection to product or company it's just the nature of the less engaging parts of being in sales. I love when I'm actively talking with someone but any of the behind the scenes shit where I'm not on the phone or a zoom with someone turns my engagement way down.

Maybe a bit..

But you're entitled to be happy wherever you are.

Maybe think hard and take stock of where you were, where you are, and what's not fulfilling.

I mean, it does sound like you are just not challenged and I can understand where that brings the true discontent.

Don't beat yourself up too much about it. Honestly, things have been so weird the past few years, it's affected a lot of us and how we view our lives/work, etc.

If you can take the time to have a meaningful break and get away so you can reset yourself, it could be beneficial.

If you're feeling unfulfilled, you might want to find a volunteer position that will provide you the opportunity to contribute some of your time.

There is something to be said for the insane koolaid and adrenaline rush of a series A company. I don't think you are being spoiled, but I do think it would be wrong of you to bounce. Chase the rush somewhere else in your out of work life and hang in there for going public and making the moolah.

I always have better success selling products I'm truly passionate about. If its an area I'm interested in, I truly understand the problem we're solving, and we really are the best in the business (at least in my eyes), then I have a much easier time conveying the value to the prospect and enjoy the pitch much more. Nothing wrong with wanting to sell something you're passionate about.

But also, yeah you're kind of being a spoiled bitch too lol. You're making great money and have an IPO coming soon with I'm sure equity to make it worthwhile.

I can definitely relate - I've always needed to feel good about what I'm selling HOWEVER, it's possible you just miss the chase/anxiety of being at the startup. Since you're hitting quota, set different goals for yourself to focus on to get some of that drive back? Take on a new project that you can pour that energy into.

You need to believe in what you sell if you want long term success and happiness in the job. However there is nothing wrong with collecting a fat paycheck either (you can believe in that, if nothing else).

So make the $$ for now but keep you eyes open for that "dream job".

Why do you need to like or be passionate about the shit you sell? Take the money and resources you gain from this job and put it into something you care about on the side. Money making or not.

Me personally, I could care less about what I do for my 9-5 as long as it allows me to do whatever I want from 5-9. Or whatever hours I need to work/play in a given day.

Take a 1 week breather and come back.
If it's that great of a job and the main thing you have to complain about is you aren't emotionally invested in the product, then congrats! You're doing great!

Many people would love to be in your position. Either find hobbies on the side that you can be invested in, or look for ways you can buy in at work.
Or 3rd, you don't have to do either - but hold out until you find something better.

Tons of people work jobs they hate, with people they hate, with products they hate.
I hope you find what you're looking for.

Seems spoiled. However selling something you’re passionate about is that much more fun. I believe if you d find that you would be way happier. And that’s the end goal right?

Does anyone actually care about the problem your tech is solving? I mean reallllyyyyyy. Don’t take yourself too seriously. There are people out there who literally cure children with cancer. We’re just in sales lol.

I can kind of relate. I sell software in an industry I would never work in, barely understand, and to an ICP that in society can be a little weird (but they are awesome and so kind, which is what keeps me going). After a couple years into it sometimes it gets a little mundane and repetitive, but a couple things I’ve do get back into it:
-I made my own quota, which is about 125% of actual quota, to push myself and motivate me to be a top-performer
-I consistently look out for good customer feedback, we have an amazing software that helps so much, and our clients love it to death. A genuinely nice compliment from a customer makes the mundane so worth it to me.
-plus if you aren’t super stressed out, use the extra energy you have to build up a side hustle or invest your money so you can have a lot of savings for runway if things go south or you take a lower paying job, and to just enjoy life in a non-stressful job every once in a while, no sense in non-stop grinding if you can’t enjoy life
Hope this helps!

Squeeze every dollar out of the role that you can whilst looking for a company that you believe in. I can't sell if I don't like the product or believe in it.

I think "passion for the product/problem" is a bit overrated.

you can grow into it.

but again, I'm cynical
