Am I an idiot?

I got an offer yesterday that a month ago I would have jumped on. However, I feel the company got excited about having me in one role, then after speaking to their board, would need to put me in a normal AE role first.

Even though I acted like I understood, I'm still annoyed.

A big part of my "issue" is when I met with the CEO he told me I can't do any outside businesses/freelance because my time would be consumed by them.

I don't know if I am willing to give up a part of who I am, to satisfy their goals.

I wouldn't. They have already gone back on their word once and you aren't even an employee ๐Ÿ‘€

What are you currently doing for freelancing? Is it worth giving up?

If the normal AE role is still a better fit than what you are currently doing, its still a net positive. Totally understand your frustration on the getting your hopes up for a better role.

I think because Iโ€™ve given up a business for a career in the past and I kick myself for it all the time, is my concern. Since we got one life.

Don't nod along just to satisfy the egos of others...say your piece and let the know what is irking you. Communication is what creates opportunity, silence is what kills you from the inside.

Agreed, Iโ€™m going to tell them what has bothered meโ€”professionally of course.

I guess this depends on how much they are going to pay you vs how much you make on the side? I wouldnโ€™t take a gig that wouldnโ€™t allow me to do side stuff (or would fire me if they found out) unless they were paying me substantially more than I make with the side stuff..

So they already did one bait and switch on you and now they tell you youโ€™ll have no work/life balance and are dictating what you can do with your free time?

I think you have your answer.

ummm yeah this is a big red flag. "you time will be consumed by them" ether means, we will work you to death, OR we are SO insecure that you have passions out side of the company we cant take it.

ether one sucks and id stay away.

The whole "yeah we want you in this role, oh JK how about this AE role" thing is another red flag.

id run homie.

Interested in the details here. What did they offer originally vs the current offer? Do they know about any freelancing or extracurriculars, are they a possible conflict of interest - not time, but with regards to what youโ€™re to be selling? Is it possible the comment from the CEO was off-the-cuff and possibly an attempt to illustrate how successful youโ€™ll be that you wonโ€™t need to even consider a second source of income?

Sales Trainer to AE

Yes and none are a conflict of interest

It was a reactive response to something I said and he went on a tangent

Sounds maybe like heโ€™s trying to sell you on the role. Is it a good one, and how do you feel about working there after this?

Up to you brah, recommend if you may go with keeping the 2 to shrink down your freelancing time just to be able to keep up with both and to not have a bad impact on your primary!

What role were they going to have you in and have you tried to go back to negotiate how you spend your time per se?

I'm ok if a company wants me to clear it with them first (make sure I'm not working with a competitor or anything like that) but I think a total ban would be a deal breaker for me unless they were willing to give me something in return.

How much time do they expect to "consume?"

I completely agree. I mean, theyโ€™re saying they work 60+ hours.

Oh man I understand this completely with the freelancing stuff. Had this happen to me at my last role before hopping into sales.

1. Voice your frustration on starting as a normal AE first and how it may cause you to walk from the offer
2. Risky but you can still freelance under their nose.

At my last role it was a red flag, perhaps it is for you too?
