And now Google...

Google joins the pack on making mass firings meaning ALL big Tech as removed around 9% of their workers

No wonder Gen Z are cynical about giving any loyalty to a company. In good times they get hired in bad times they get fired!! WHY should they be loyal, the Big tech companies have not shown any loyalty to them?

Tech companies of all industries should have improved productivity by innovation and new businesses not just hired more heads, to fire them 18 months later!! Business leaders should anticipate higher interest rates, higher inflation, so that people can smoothly transition rather than hire and fire !!

IMO it's not easy to build a culture if business leaders can not anticipate business cycles better than indicated with today's leaders. Don't get me wrong, I am not against removing / reducing headcount in tough times to save the overall business but today's leaders criticize loyalty and this hire and fire cycles are totally opposite to performance culture.

Nonsense.

I'm GenX and realized a long time ago that there's no such thing as company loyalty, and honestly, it was a myth in the first place.

Always take care of yourself. Do it honestly and with integrity, but you owe your employer no loyalty. They won't show you any when the shareholders demand their pound of flesh.

(dang this is cynical for a Friday)

Exactly! Most of my close circle that doesn't work in sales has never understood the job hopping we do but we usually get a HUGE bump switching companies bc no one wants to pay for loyalty anymore - they just expect we want to "be part of the family". It's like shut up and pay me and I'll stick around until the next person wants to pay me more. No pensions, no loyalty bonuses, no paid sabbaticals as a thank you for hanging out for more than 18 months? You're going to lose top performers.

AMEN! I left my last job because of many reasons, but the main reason was that they didn't want to give me the raise I deserved, so I left the company and got the raise I wanted. I told two of my colleagues that they should leave as well and get the money they deserved. They stayed because they wanted to be loyal to the company. They got laid off from that company the first week of Jan... with a 3-week pay severance...no health care...

You think you’re owed something for working at a job for 18 months?

Dude wake up. I served 8 years in the Marine Corps and got less benefits and pay than you did for that 18 months putting my life on the line.

The entitlement of the younger generations is fucking insane. You have amazing health care coverage from historical standards, high pay in tech, paid vacation and time off, months of paternity/maternity leave, retirement account contributions…. Etc. These are just things you take for granted and fail to consider.

What makes you so star-bangled awesome you even deserve a paycheck? Do you really bring something that special to the table? I wish people took the time to do a self-awareness check…. And ask questions like “do I contribute truly to the success of the company in a big way?” or “is what I bring to the table average?” or “could I easily be replaced?”

Way too many employees, and way to many sales people, over index their capabilities and impact because they hit quota - and we’re surrounded by people who always make more and feel entitled to that cash.

I think Apple is one of the few who haven’t had massive layoffs. There is no such thing as loyalty by an employer. Why should an employee have loyalty?
