Another hot edition of stay or go: stay at a chill job or go somewhere corporate for more $

Context:

Top performing SDR, but my team has been failing hard at prospecting all year. So hard that they just fired half of my team.

I was "promoted" upon them getting fired to an ISR role, however there was no pay bump to start and they weren't planning on backfilling my team. It's also a role that I turned down in January because it's for a product I don't prefer. Essentially I was now responsible for doing 2 jobs at the same pay & got pulled off a product I love.

Naturally I got mad and angry-applied to 2x jobs. Heard back from one at a market leader in the security space for an SDR role and got an offer much higher than what I was making, $54k OTE vs. $75k OTE +$25k equity

Plot twist - yesterday my manager surprises me with a pay bump similar to my offer at $70k OTE and makes my title change official. Also got approval to backfill the team apparently, and will be able to slide me back to the product that I love in a couple of weeks.

Should I stay or should I go?

Staying:

  • Likely won't hit OTE as our strategy is failing
  • None of my team is in my city anymore & the m:f ratio is like 10:1 at my company(female)
  • Can complete cloud engineer certification I've been working on
  • I have a ton of freedom & flexibility
  • Faster promotional path to AE
  • I love the product but it's a bitch to outbound, cloud is complicated
  • I get zero coaching or feedback even though I've asked multiple times so I won't actually become a better rep

Leaving:

  • More $ long term - they pay their ISRs $120k-$140k, and the manager told me he's over 100% of quota for his reps
  • Way more rules & red tape, minimum 16 months hitting consistent quota as an SDR until promotion
  • I can't leave if it's bad - jumping around as an SDR once is already a bad look
  • Selling into public sector & that doesn't really match my personality, got feedback multiple times during the interview process that I'm funny but "button it up a little"
  • Will actually become a better seller, I got more feedback during a 30 minute interview than I've gotten in 10 months at my current job
  • Will definitely be more successful, their product is much simpler to sell and the company is bigger so there's more segmentation

Stay at the current role and keep shopping around for the perfect fit. Looks good getting the promotion and staying for some time

No marketing, mayo isn't an MQL
I'd hold out for now but keep applying.

If the public sector doesn't match your personality, then it could be more of a pain to sell.

As @Mooney said, a few more months and you'll be receiving even better offers.

I would say don't be afraid of the perception of job-hopping - if you want to give this new role a go and it doesn't work out, you'll still be able to land a good job.

Personally just left a company after 6 months as it was nothing like what was promised.  Didn't have an issue when interviewing after explaining my reasoning.

Stay an continue to look. There are so many opening, plus you got the title. You keep that title a few more months and now you get even more money. Unless you want to sell to give then grab the bag!

Have you reached out to any the reps currently working there or do any research of what the employees think of the company?

Ultimately you need to do what you think is best for you. As far as red tape, that's an unfortunate thing we all have to jump through. Good luck.

I've spoken with 2x of their SDRs who they set me up with and am in the process of speaking with 2x who they didn't over LinkedIn.  The 2x they set me up with only had good things to say.  I think they were both trying to sell me but I also may be paranoid.

Thank you!

Due to money or a lack of progression?

Due to how arbitrary they are making it. Seems your career there will probably be stunted by how they decide things.

That's true, the promotion is pretty arbitrary, essentially still mostly prospecting.

Thank you!

If you need the money go but if you really like the original company I would tell them about the offer and they might match it

I would make the jump. My entire career has been in Public Sector and it does take nuance. If you want to know more let me know. Your patch should be a HUGE determining factor.

Ride out the ISR role for a few months and keep looking in the interim.  Easier to go from ISR -> AE and run the risk of starting as a BDR with the "6-12 month promotion" promise without knowing internal politics and how you'll perform out of the gates.

Load up some months on the ISR and eventually AE experience and find someone external to help mentor/help you or hell pay a BS sales coach with the pay bump, bet even if you are skeptical of the coach you'll be thinking more critically about what you can do differently.

Either way, do what you think is right, just seen too many folks fall into the BDR carousel
