Anyone transitioned from Individual Contributor to Management?

Bonjour savages!

I have transitioned to management a couple of years ago and luckily things went relatively smoothly. However, I am hearing a lot of horror-stories from peers where the transition went terribly wrong.

Who of you are in a leadership position and could you share any tips/tricks/advice on team motivation, earning respect etc.?

I was an SDR Manager for a while. One mistake that I made when I first started was thinking that I had to know all of the answers. It's okay to to not know everything. But you have to make an effort to find out

I'm about to start a role that involves leading others, but I can say the best managers I've worked with are the ones who take the time to learn about me as a person and who are invested in seeing me succeed. It makes me want to work harder when I know my manager not only cares about me but is actively doing everything they can to put me in a position for success.

That's a great point Chep! I think having that more personal rather than transactional relationship is super important.
I see a lot of "new" leaders fall into the trap of becoming the voice of senior leadership rather than being the voice of his/her team upwards.

Amen. Shit rolls down hill, but someone has grab the bucket and stop it or else everyone ends up annoyed and smelling awful

Being with the team as a team member has always helped me ease leadership role transition

Even today, I'm in touch with my old team folks
For that, investing in team as you would in your own growth does the trick

Absolutely! Being down in the trenches with the team is something that builds trust and respect.
