Asked to take assessment before even a phone screen. Red flag or am I overthinking this?

I recently applied for a job that on paper I have the perfect background for. I applied and then they sent me a canned link asking me to take a 35minute -1 hour assessment. Ive taken things like this before but its usually after an interview or two.

Being asked to take this before even a conversation just feels wrong to me. Like they want me to invest an hour of my time before we even know if there's mutual interest. Am I way over thinking this?

Update: I went ahead and just did it. I still think its BS and honestly it leaves a bit of a bad taste in my mouth, but I did it.

Before you even talk to a recruiter? Is that correct?

Been seeing this more and more lately. Feels one sided to have to jump through hoops to even talk to someone.

Yeah and part of me thinks "this is how shitty they treat candidates, how shitty do they treat their employees?"
But again, I feel like I could be overthinking that haha

Far too common, unfortunately. Really rubs me the wrong way - at least give a guy a phone screen.
If you really like the opportunity, go for it, but just keep an eye out for other signs in the process that they don't value your time.
If you see them, maybe bow out - not a good sign for what the employee experience will be like. Candidate experience is usually a good indicator of that.

You will start as a score on paper, and never be more than a number on the payroll. They can do better, which means you should do better and look elsewhere.

It's common. It's absolutely self-serving and shitty.

It is BS and it probably won’t go anywhere. You to network to the DM/HM.

Feels like a red flag if they're rolling this out before a first conversation.

This is not great, but also is an indicator of how many applications they're getting. They're trying to sort them before they sort them. Hopefully it gets better from here.

Its very common and in some cases automated. If you don't complete, you application might not move forward unless you're being recommended by someone and you cv is sent to the hiring managers inbox

Cognitive and behavioral assessments are the strongest correlations to success. It’s been proven in many studies, and it’s the best way for you and the company to not make a bad decision. I support it whole heartedly.

Why do you feel that way? Ive 2/4 places I've worked out of college had us do them. They had way more turnover than the other two places Ive worked. I realize that is anecdotal though.

Don't work for a company that leaves a bad taste in your mouth. You will be miserable. Don't do it to yourself. You deserve better, if it's not urgent look for something else. They need you, more then you need them. A company is nothing without their employees. All the best.

Took about 40 minutes about half was personality type assessments and the other half felt like one of my business school exams. It wasnt super difficult, just rubbed me the wrong way that they're giving me homework without the decency to meet first to see if there's mutual interest. Im probably overthinking things but it just rubbed me the wrong way.
