Asking for a raise within first year with company

I have been in my role since June of 2021 and have my annual review coming up next week. With inflation being so high right now and the amount of money recruiters are offering for similar roles that I am in. I think its fair to ask for a raise during this annual review since I have performed so well thus far with the company. However I am nervous to ask since I havent been with the company a full year but also do not want to wait until next March for another annual review.

What suggestions do you have for asking for a raise within the first year at my company?

Ask for raise based on performance, not inflation

That’s exactly how I would phrase it. “I know this may sound odd, but with my current performance and inflation hovering around 7.5-8%, I was hoping we could address that and maybe revisit a merit-based raise after I’ve been here a year.”

And if they respond positively, set that date for June or July with the understanding that it’s a one-off meeting to adjust for schedules.

Inflation is affecting them as well, and it's not really compelling as a reason.

You can bring up that your performance has been good (bring datapoints) and request a merit raise.   If their concern is that you haven't been with them for a year, that's your cue to ask to revisit the raise after that year and meet in July to discuss.

Go contrarian:

I want to let you know I'm not asking for a raise based on inflation. Given my performance over the last 12 months, I want to know how we can work together to get to an OTE in the range of (insert target).

Oh some additional tips:

1. Negotiate with the DM directly. If your manager can't give you a raise, talk to the person that can or make sure they are a part of the meeting.

2. Meet in person > virtual > phone > email
When you're in person you get a lot more data: body language, tone, etc

3. Have some data up your sleeve (salary reports, comp ranges from recruiters who have reached out to you, etc)

4. Practice, rehearse the meeting, have some written out responses to possible objections.

5. Don't get attached to the outcome. You don't NEED a raise, you want one (dont want to come across as needy/desperate).

You’re close enough to a full
Year. By the time it’s implemented, it’ll be a year.

i would not focus on inflation first. Focus on your results. Do they have any path to a raise? like any steps laid out in your contract or internally you can reference?

if not, bring it up in the meeting. But i would wait till the end. let the conversation go and see what the boss has to say.

if she is telling you that you are doing well and very happy with your performance id say:

"im really excited to hear you say that. with my performance being very strong I wanted to discuss a merit base raise. is that something you would be open to talking about?

she will MOST LIKELY be caught off gaurd and try to deflect
"yeah I think that we can talk about that after your 1 year mark" or something like that.

if that happens you have to double down.
"ok great, so its more of a timing thing in your mind? can we get a date on the calendar to talk about that? I know there would be people you would have to speak to. I would like to talk about a 7-8% raise. When can we talk next? "

something like that, its going to feel uncomfortable but you can do it......besides your in sales negotiating is what your suppose to do!

happy to talk more about this

If you don’t ask you don’t get. Base it on your performance since you control that.

Depends on if everyone else is getting raises for performance or if it was outlined in the interviewing process.

2nd everything else.

I was hired at a really good start up about 4 months ago for a SDR role that I was told I wouldn’t be in for very long. They’re gonna go public in the next year, but Zoom Info reached out to me about an Account exec position. Now I’m wondering if I should take the guaranteed route to AE or let my shares vest and get to AE at the place that took me. Usually I wouldn’t consider jumping so quickly, but AE is AE.
