Bad time to entertain switch to software?

hey all,

with all the recent layoffs taking place, is it a bad time to consider transitioning to software from medical?

was contacted by a saas company calling into medical and the OTE is quite a bit more than I make now in medical..... product seems great based on my experience in medical but hesitant seeing as it seems like everyday tech companies are announcing new layoffs.

doing great in my current role, well respected at current org and although it's impossible to guarantee I feel I'm safe even if layoffs were to happen.  concern would be leaving for saas, and being first on the chopping block if layoffs were to happen.

ote is currently about 85k more than my current ote.

no its not a bad time to make the switch. you just need to be careful about what company choose to work for.

Is the base significantly higher, or are they promising potential earnings?

Do a lot of research on the company (Repvue) and backchannel to current and former reps to see if the reality matches the recruiter’s promises.

Appreciate all the insight. As for company itself, doesn’t appear they’ve had layoffs and first thing I did was look them up on repvue and unfortunately nothing there. They call into my current space and I know the need they offer is there and I know they’re a reputable company in that space although newer and solving a well known antiquated challenge. On indeed it appeared they had a mixed bag of reviews but overall they seemed to be more positive than negative. My biggest fear is the layoff factor. The base is about 30k higher than my current, ote as listed about 90k higher than my current but I’d consider myself very safe in my current position as I’ve repeatedly been a top performer at my org.

Can you talk to some current reps by reaching out on LI? They're unlikely to know about layoffs, but they are likely to know about attainment and how it is to actually work there.

The biggest thing I’ve noticed is the cut has all been right sizing. There are too many inbound calls that are easy sales, too many internal cost centers that don’t produce any real value, and too many companies that need a better product market fit. If the product sells, you should be good. I have a couple of really fantastic stories related to the need to have a bench for both showing a need funding and being ready for the next big push. That isn’t happening in this environment. You can cut 20-50% of most established software companies and they can still run.

I know a lot of companies carried a lot of reps, not caring if they made quota, to focus on market penetration. Sucked to be a rep there, that’s for sure.

how does the company look? IE.(have they been through layoffs already? Are they hiring because demand for the product is there to support another sales role?)
