Calling all player coaches!

Our saas sales org is transitioning some top performers to a player coach role as our company is aiming to 3x ARR and hire rapidly. We're in need of some advice.

For anyone in a player coach role, could you please share:

  • OTE split
  • How did your IC commission rates change moving to the player-coach role?
  • What % commission do you earn on your team's deals
  • How did your personal quota change moving from pure IC to your personal quota in the player-coach role?

Cheers all!

Player-coach is not a long term role, you should be closing your BoB and moving solely into a leadership/management position.

You do the reps under you a disservice when you can't focus solely on the team growth and targets.

I've never had a good experience with a leader in that role.

I hope it's different for you org though.

Best of luck.

I hate the “player coach” role. You can’t serve two masters. You can mentor someone but if you are managing them as well as your own deals, something will eventually give.

Agree with everyone on here, not the greatest career move for multiple reasons

I did the player-coach role for about a year and hated it. I loved my team, but management was aggravating to deal with. I also know my earnings declined when I lost 15 hours a week to team management.

Truthfully have never seen a player coach role work out for anyone...

My comp didn’t change at all when I moved to player coach. The idea is that I’d move to full time coach somewhat quickly and it was to help me ramp up. That’s still going to happen but now I’ve been in this role for a minute. I don’t think this is what should happen, just my experience.
