Can I negotiate, or will it be out of place?

This May, I wanted to leave my current company, which has about 30 people(I was aiming for a startup but realized it was not the best solution). I decided to stay and they raised my salary at that time(30%up). As for raises, we do evaluations every six months and it's more like you have to ask for a raise as you prove more value. I'm responsible for inbound and account management, overall I'm doing average, although the company is happy with my work.

Recently I got two interesting job offers where there is a higher salary by almost 50%. I wonder if I can now go to the manager to ask for a raise to market standards, although I already got a raise in June? What do you guys think? I want to do it the right way because the company is small and if I do well I might get shares in the future, but you never know, right? I want to earn more but I wouldn't want to miss the chance to become a partner because they'll think I'm greedy.

Another option is to wait a while, do the results and then go for a raise. Only I will lose those other offers then.

Basically, I have a good commission scheme and it is pretty the same as other offers but the base salary is much higher. So I want to talk only about the base salary ;).

What should he do?

I put down go as in just go. There's no way they're going to raise your salary another 50% 2 months after they raised it 30% for "average" work unless you're severely underpaid. Not every company gives share options and if they're not already planning it you won't see any anytime soon. Also, they won't give you enough shares to be a "partner", you'll have to work there for years in order for them to vest, you'll only get paid on them if they get bought or go public, and then you're taxed on them. I would just grab the cash now.

If you decide to negotiate now, be prepared to leave if you don’t get what you asked for. It’s about credibility : you can’t request a 50% raise because you got it elsewhere, and stay even though you didn’t get it. If you do that, they’ll know they have leverage (because you value other stuff within the company, the work, your life there, the people, whatever…) and don’t need to take seriously your ask.

Don't negotiate based on other offers unless you're willing to leave and accept one of those offers.

If you try to negotiate based on one of those offers, don't get any type of raise, then stay anyway, it's not a good look for you. It makes it look like you either lied to try and get another raise, or that you like it there so much they can pay you whatever they want and you'll stay.

I'm not saying they have to match the 50% for you to stay and not take the other offers. If they come up 20% and you're happy with that and happy with where you're at then great! But if you go to your boss, say you want a 50% raise because you have an offer in hand for that, and he says no they can't give you more money, then you stay - not a good look.

I voted 1, but am kind of torn.

A common trait of good salespeople is going after what you want, and negotiating. But it could also be viewed as greedy, given your recent raise.

Tough choice

That is going to be a tough sell. If you do decide to pursue an additional raise at your current company based on the offer you just received, be prepared to leave if you don't get the raise. I suspect you won't get the raise - so are you ready to leave, or are you enjoying the work and want a reason to see if you can get additional $$?

You just got a raise and now want another big one? That won’t go well for you.

Hmm, it wasn't like that. A friend offered me equity and salary in a startup and I wanted to go for it because I was underpaid here. So it is a bit like they updated the salary but it is still under the market value. At the time they offered it I couldn't negotiate because that would be a faux pass.

The grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence. Do whatever is in line with your goals. (I am betting you don't have any written down.)
