Can you watch TV and be successful too?

Saw a few posts on LinkedIn from some people pretty high level in their sales careers (VPs and Ent AEs) say that watching TV, spending an hour on youtube, drinking, going out clubbing, social media etc, are all a waste of time and that you can't expect to be successful if you don't cut these out of your lives.

Now, I'm pretty aggressive with how I spend my time and block my calendar but I always have about an hour just to watch TV or youtube or socialize (do something I enjoy) everyday + a few more hours on the weekend to watch some good movies (I'm a movie buff, if anything thats my vice). I'm 22 - and you can imagine how easily impressioned I am by people who are where I want to be making statements about how to get there.

would love to know if there's VPs and High income earners here ($700k and up) who made it there while enjoying life a little. I grind, but I don't want to wake up one day and be a millionaire who has never seen the avengers and has only 2 friends he sees every 8 months.

Exactly what I was thinking - they can shamelessly self-promote but not watch GoT?

The CEO of Goldman Sachs is literally a DJ at clubs. Everything is good in moderation and doing things you enjoy is super important.

Yes, it's possible to work hard and play hard. What's the point of being super successful and making bank if you don't have hobbies and friends on which to spend it? Even something as simple as watching TV or playing video games can serve as a necessary break from the grind and help you avoid burnout.

Please. People who spend time telling others how they choose to spend their free time are pretentious twits. You work to live, not live to work.

I’m sorry what? Everyone has SOME sort of outlet, like @braintank said

Such BS. This always gets debunked when I meet vps that stop working at 5, do weekday drinks with friends, and spend their weekends traveling or golfing. You can be successful professionally and personally. Those people that do nothing but work are losers and suck at parties.

The key to life is moderation. Doesnt mean I can't watch tv. But It's more about when and I watch and not how much. So just be sensitive to your schedule. Look to be efficient and effective, not busy.

Moderation. You can work 8 hours a day and make the same as the person who claims to work 14-16hrs. Work smart and do for yourself and know that your job will always see you as replaceable.

The most important thing is to identify what helps you re-charge, and make sure to prioritize that thing. You can't give any effort to improving your success if you're not getting to re-charge.

For me, this includes a mixture of playing videogames, watching YT, and going for back roads drives. I do occasionally binge-watch a season of a show on a weekend too.

Another comment - Being a 'Millionaire' is not all it's cracked up to be by these 'influencers'. Really, until you're in the decamillionaire club ($10M+ net worth) you're not experiencing a fundamentally different lifestyle than someone that's earning $100K+ in a given year. In fact, most 'millionaires' earn roughly $100K... they've just been doing it longer than you and have had the opportunity to save up a bigger nest egg.

I have had $700K+ years, all while playing Call of Duty, watching YT videos, and wasting hours in my car driving nowhere in particular. It's all about what gets you in the right head-space to get shit done.

Don't fall for the motivation porn that you have to enslave yourself to someone else's idea of success to meet your goals.

I’m a 2X VP at both startup and public companies. I prioritize family, travel, fun and plenty of crap tv and sports. There’s no amount of money you could pay me to change my priorities. The incremental income isn’t worth it for me. Put in the work to be awesome but figure out ways to always be more efficient.

Not in sales, but I know wildly successful high performers that spend every late night watching stand up or random youtube videos, who also enjoy nightlife and happy hours. It’s doable and has been done.

I cut 90% out and haven’t looked back. I limit my free phone time as well. It’s forced me to mange time better and the quality time with my family has drastically increased. I won’t go back.

It's such a stupid thing to say. "You can't be successful and take time to unwind and enjoy yourself". What's the point of being successful if you can enjoy yourself?

I can watch sports and still be productive, but could never watch a show or anything that really sucks you in the entire time
