Changing Verticals

Curious to hear from those who've bounced around between different verticals in their career. So far almost all my experience has been in healthtech. I have a ton of knowledge on healthcare at this point, and have a solid network. That said, I'm interested in exploring different opportunities.

On one hand, I feel like staying in healthtech for the long haul could help my career long term as I'll have the domain experience to open doors. On the other hand, I feel like the grass could be greener with higher earning potential if I were to switch to something more traditional enterprise SaaS.

Anyway, just curious what others think.

I’ve bounced. Martech to fintech to ML over the past 8 years. I can honestly tell you that there hasn’t been a move that was advantageous in terms of income. If anything it’s been more challenging each time, particularly as the market’s appetite for tech has diminished. I didn’t really have a choice but to make the moves. But in hindsight, had I been able to stay put, I’d be better off right now.

I’d discourage the movement.

Healthtech is interesting imo because of the growth of health as our gdp. Because of the constant changes in healthcare it would be difficult to leave. I think a different opportunity sounds like its in order but might be smart to leverage the healthcare experience

I have bounced a lot - mostly due to startups not being vertical-ized, but rather size of company and I have been strategic my whole career.

Some verticals have important nuances to know, but over all, my experience has been that the size of the company dictates 90% of their issues they are facing.

There is something to be said about diversifying in case things get rocky with the job market the next year (as I expect they will), but usually being a expert in a particular area is a more lucrative way to keep going up the ladder. I say if you like it, keep on keeping on. Mostly so I don't have to deal with healthcare - the use cases are awesome but darn if the data privacy doesn't ruin ALL ARCHITECTURES.

If I love that industry, considering the existing market, I would definitely stick out there vs experimenting something new (at the peak of my career) where I may be required to unlearn and learn.

Honestly, healthtech is only going to expand, so I'd take that into consideration. The challenge you'll face by bouncing is having to build up that network again as well as work up that corporate ladder to where the real money is found (strategic). You may have an advantage IF the enterprise SaaS company is looking to hire a strategic rep with healthcare industry experience, so that would be the opportunities I'd keep my eyes open for if I was you.

But yes, the grass is always greener is a valid, valid saying for a reason.

My opinion, bouncing around sucks. My last job moved the entire teams focus every month and then wondered why production wasn't good. If you can be a subject matter expert then be one and make that money

I would try something else to see how it goes, for a rep like you with that massive experience you can get back too easily to healthcare if things didn't go well at SaaS or any other field you wanna try, good luck!

I've bounced. You can always learn a new industry.

You can learn whatever you put your mind too. Sales is largely based on EQ and listening. Healthcare isn’t going anywhere. Just make sure you are super passionate about new product. My best advice comes from a buddy that gets tattoos and doesn’t tell any one. He waits a month and if he still thinks it’s a good idea he gets it. No input from anyone lol
